Im usually a guitarist, but I got myself a place in an awesome Death metal band influenced by Morbid Angel, Nile, Immolation etc as bassist...the problem is I dont have a bass at the moment. I dont have much money at all, I'm 17, dont have a job, but basically, I'm trying to get hold of a bass, doesent have to be incredible quality, would preferably be 5 string as we'll be playing in B standard tuning so its easier...

I dont mind about buying second hand, all my guitars are second hand, I just need to get hold of a cheap bass

found this on ebay, my friend has one and I thought it was alright, but I guess it aint incredible, what do you guys think?

you could try the ibanez gsr205: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Ibanez-GSR205-5-String-Bass-101585172-i1150633.gc

i have a pretty cheap 4-string ibanez and i love it and it works for me (i play death metal too, as well as some other stuff). i'm thinking of also upgrading to the gsr205 considering i'm in a similar situation as you (i'm 15, have no job and all that). i've been checking out this bass for a little while now.

here's a vid playing along to spawn of possession which is pretty much the style you're going for: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdWJmdYg8dE

also check out some of these reviews:

hope i helped and good luck with your band

She's so pretty in her casts
The prettiest thing I've ever seen
I only get to hold her when she's injured
I only get to kiss her where she's sore

I have to agree, go with the GSR205. I haven't played the 5 string model but the 6 was very good for the price

Ibanez basses are pretty much the go for dirt cheap. Some yamaha's are alright too.

into Morbid Angel?
too bad you want a 5stringer cause I've had one of Dave's old TAK basses sitting here for a while.

it was setup when I bought it to BEAD

but ya, the suggestions that the others have given you are excellent ones....

yes this was his backup and was not used for this picture whenever that was..

my point being a lot of people use 4 stringers for BEAD, but again the suggestions given here for a cheap 5string bass are excellent.

remember cheap is only cheap to the person who thinks it is cheap, but how cheap does cheap have to be to be cheap?

For cheaper basses, I've had the Rondo Music SX 5 string, Rogue 5 from Musicians Friend, and used Dean Edge 5's and 4's. None were bad basses, the Rogue I had bought for my son and he lost interest so I just used it at our church. Sounded just fine for any type of music. My favorite is the Dean Edge 5 that I still have. Picked that one up on e-bay for $115 shipped.
1981 G&L L 1000
Dean Razor NT5
Dean Hardtail 5
Dean Sledge Hammer 5 Ash
Dean Sledge Hammer 5 Mahogany
Dean Edge 1-5
Dean Edge Q-6 string
Dean Rhapsody 4
Axle Acoustic bass
MiniStar 5 string bass
Dean DOA Caddilac
Dean V-Wing acoustic

rexherring has the right idea. those he mentioned or Davison also under 150 new or cheap from ebay/CL used for 100 or less. Hell I even had a 50.00 Samick5 artist series that was really playable.

perfect, no playable yes.

beyond the pickups usually being the weak link in them, all nice enough to rock a 4 hour show with and not have cuts from sharp fret ends, blisters because the action was so high it hurt to play from a neck that was so bad.

and kerk, no I wouldn't sell the DV tomorrow, I kinda showed it because you said you like MA and you would appreciate the pic and he played a lot of C or B tuned music on a 4string. The guy I bought it from got it from someone in 88 and had it hanging on his wall since 90, he knew I like old 80's rare stuff so I bought it.

But now a days with all the choices out there 100-150.00 new/used..naw get a 5er. You got a lot of years, and a lot of moneymaking then you'll go up to something different once the cashflow is abundant.

enjoy your hunt
