So Pit, I have something what I consider to be a real treat for the mind and I'm sharing it with you.
Through friends, I've come across a link leading to this collection of coloured images of Russia taken in the first two decades of the 20th century. It might not seem like much until one learns that no shooping has been involved - they were just as colourful when taken.

In those years, photographer Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944) undertook a photographic survey of the Russian Empire with the support of Tsar Nicholas II. He used a specialized camera to capture three black and white images in fairly quick succession, using red, green and blue filters, allowing them to later be recombined and projected with filtered lanterns to show near true color images. The high quality of the images, combined with the bright colors, make it difficult for viewers to believe that they are looking 100 years back in time - when these photographs were taken, neither the Russian Revolution nor World War I had yet begun

This is simply mind blowing for me as I didn't really read through the text at first and thought that the images were fairly modern and the people were just posing in the clothes. Well the images are in fact a century old and just as good as some modern pictures.

Some samples:

The glorious collection can be found here:

The black and white makes old people rustic and interesting.

Now they just look bored, poor, and lazy.

That blew my mind as a kid. Every picture and such I'd seen from the 40s and older were in black and white so I just figured that colors were invented in the 70s.

Old, yes, but still amazing. These pictures are on par with even today's highest quality digital shots, yet predate them by over a century.

However, it's kind of depressing to think that everyone in these pictures are now long dead.

Doesn't seem to be for more than 30-45 seconds, given how little the baby in the bottom-left corner moved in this pic:
