I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of chords most twinkly emo bands like
grown ups, snowing and Algernon Cadwallader use? I know they use open tunings a lot. Do they mostly use octaves?

Grown ups- weed science (curious about this song)

Well octaves aren't a type of chord, it's the same note played an octave apart.

That song, most of the guitar part is single note riffs, some octaves here and there, when a chord is played it's either a power chord or a major chord.
And no, Guitar Hero will not help. Even on expert. Really.

Yeah, like Alan said, probably power chords with the occasional major chord...

If there is a second guitar, its either a fifth, or an octave... probably.

I can write a coherent tune ... But 3/4? I play rock, not polka.

Good for you, I actually play this kind of music.

Insta-twinkle steps to make it sound generic and like every other band out there:

1. Tune to DAEAC#E

2. Slap a capo on any fret.

3. Use these chords in an order that sounds good:

---0---0---0---0---
---0---0---0---0---
---0---2---4---7---
---0---0---0---0---
---0---0---0---0---
---0---2---4---7---
4. Twinkle around with this scale:

---0--1--3---------
---0--1------------
---0--2--4---------
---0--2--4---------
---0--2--4---------
---0--2--4--5--7--

Honestly though, just be creative and figure it out for yourself. Also try, FACGCE.

It's the same as all other harmony. Surround yourself with skulls and candles if it helps.
