Pit, I just had a marvelous idea, but here's some backstory:

Ernest Hemingway was once challenged to write a complete short story in only six words. Hemingway, being the complete baller that he was, rose to the occasion. He returned shortly after, with what he considered his greatest story:

For sale: baby shoes, never worn.

I was taken aback. There was so much sadness, so much grief and loss contained within those six short words. The scope of all the characters implied but not mentioned was fantastic. I contemplated it for a while longer and thought, "Pfft, The Pit can do that!"

So Pit, I propose this challenge. Write a complete story in six words. See what your mind can create with such harsh limitations. I will be thinking of one as well. Good luck!

edit: feel free to review/comment on each other's stories. If you can think of a way to improve it, by all means, do!

Damn, Steve's dead. Who killed him?

Six words, you have drama, mystery, action, tragedy, and death.

Ernest Hemingway never wrote that. A play-rite writing a play about him said he wrote it.

I didn't know that, thanks. I still think it's a great story. And Hemingway is still a badass.

It implies that the baby died before being able to wear the shoes.

Or that they simply bought the wrong size.

Or the baby had no feet.
Or they bought it on eBay for really cheap and are looking to make a profit.

Or the fact the she had to sell those baby shoes could imply that she didn't have much money in the first place. She sacrificed everything for the child, she wasn't rich to begin with. Her hopes were high. She was going to be a mother. But stillborn.

This reminds me of English classes where you have to analyse every tiny detail in a novel and make a statement which the writer couldn't have possibly intended.

If the person making the interpretation isn't some kid trying to bullshit a passing grade, or some feminist doing a "feminist reading" of the book, you'd be surprised as to how much is actually intended. My English teacher told us that what makes a great writer great is what he doesn't say. He gives you the tip of the iceberg and it's up to you to uncover the rest. Poetry even more so.
