(excuse the sloppy tab-fixing here)

I've come across a couple of tabs recently with bits that look like this:

|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
|--10-12-12-12-12-12-12-12--15-15-15-15-15-15-15-15----|
|----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
|---7--9--9--9--9--9--9--9---9--12-12-12-12-12-12-12-12----|
|-----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
|-----------------------------------------------------------------------------|

How do you play that? Is it the same as:

e|----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
B|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
G|-7777777777777777-5555555555555555-333333333333-|
D|-xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx-|
A|-5555555555555555-3333333333333333-111111111111-|
D|-------------------------------------------------------------------------|

where your finger frets the 5th string with putting pressure the 4th (in the example), or is this an entirely different technique?

Sorry I explained it so badly, hopefully someone will know what I mean?

You play them the same way. The first tab you wrote is just an octave on the D string, as opposed to the second, which is on octave on the A string

Yes, it's the same....sort of. Unless you're doing a "fingerpicking" thing where you pluck the 2 strings with your fingers and completely don't touch the middle string, you just mute the middle string.

If you're strumming, hold the low note with your first finger, and the high note with your 3rd (or 4th) finger. Mute the middle string with your 2nd finger.
