I like to use my right thumb to mute the upper strings but I always get harmonics when I'm doing it :s

I have seen several videos about thumb muting and it seems ok, but when I try it I get harmonics. It looks like I'm doing it right but I know there have to be something wrong.

Can you help me?

Touch the string harder with your thumb, not so hard to fret the note, but enough so that the string can't vibrate enough to produce the harmonic

I came here to say this. That's exactly what you need to do.
