Hello Pit,

I'm sure some of you kinda like harsh vocals(growling, screaming, shrieking etc)

So how did you come to like harsh vocals?

Opeth kinda opened me up to the harsh vocals style. I was listening to black and death metal a lot when I was in college but never really liked it but liked the instruments until I heard Opeth.

I simply can not stand them. I love raspy, high rock vocals but as long as it is singing... I do not care for the screaming/growling/etc AT ALL

Are we talking "harsh" vocals like blues, folk jazz or that modern, nancy, wannabe-cool, formula-following "harsh vocals" you kids seem to be into?

It could be as harsh as you like or whatever. Unclean singing. Dirty Singing or whatever.

Trivium and Sylosis got me into screaming and growls etc. I used to hate them with a passion, now I don't mind them and sort of like them.

Oh yeah I like vocals such as James Hetfield, but as soon as the lyrics are inaudible and it's just flat out screaming/growling, I dislike it.

For me it was Avenged Sevenfold's Waking the Fallen and Trivium's Ascendancy albums. Before that, I was really almost exclusively a classic rock and grunge-era fan.

I just find it hard to appreciate harsh vocals when you hear what singers like John Farnham, Freddie Mercury and Bob Catley can do without resorting to screaming/growling.

A Japanese band called D'espairsRay got me into the harsher vocals, if I recall correctly. I was going through a hard time music-wise because the music I had been listening to started going extremely downhill (read: one particular singer started singing about cockroaches to the melody of Dragostea din tei), and I think I just started gravitating towards a metal band because I wanted to feel badass.

Then I found old In Flames material a few years ago.

That's a really dumb statement. Like, completely. Especially with using the word "resorting". Come on man, have some respect. Just because you dislike a certain style as much as others, doesn't mean it's lower. It still takes skill and talent.

That's like saying so and so rock band don't resort to hip-hop

To thread, I guess it just grew on me. To me, growling/screaming is absolutely no different to any other vocal style. They're all the same, require the same effort and skill, and in the end produce an end result that is artisticly expressive of the artists intentions.

EDIT: LOL repeating words

I don't remember. It was probably when I was getting into metal and I realized I really didn't like high screechy vocals. I don't like high-pitched sounds in general.

Dave Vincent on Altars of Madness. When I first heard it I thought it sounded like thrash vocals except pissed off 100x more. There's plenty of great DM bands that I rarely listen to because the vox are unremarkable. (Obituary and Death, for example) Though Obituary has two or three cool vocal moments on the Cause of Death album.

I had never really cared about the lyrics to music anyways. So not being able to understand distorted vocals has never bothered me.

I do think that vocals are the weakest link in death metal. Too many vocalists do it in a very uninteresting, unoriginal way. Or do it because they're expected to in order to fit in their genre. It's limiting in that way. That and it prevents people from getting into otherwise awesome music. It confuses me though, why all the hangup on distorted vocals but love for distorted guitar?

I mean you hear some bad ass distortion going on and you're like awwww yea. Or you hear an amazingly smooth creamy clean tone and just smile. Well, when I hear a good death vocalist doing something interesting with his role it makes me feel much better about the music. Hearing Incantation and Demilich the first time blew me away for that reason.

I understand. But looking down on it is a bit unfair just because you dislike it. I'm sure there are screamers/growlers who are the equivalent of Freddie Mercury... and it would be a bit unfair to say they're not as good of a vocalist just because of a different style.

But, subjectivity and all that.

People always try to put down what they don't like so they can feel better about their own preferences. Regardless of who is subjectively right or wrong, it makes em look like a douche.

The first album with growls that I liked was probably Waking the Fallen by A7X. Then I got into Mastodon, Protest the Hero, and BTBAM. I usually don't like when the band only uses harsh vocals. It has to be mixed together with the clean, like Protest the Hero. I think BTBAM is the only band I listen to regularly that mainly uses harsh vocals. I don't really care about their vocals though. It's all about the instruments with them.
