Do you look at power chords in a song and figure out which it belongs to?
Do you look at the notes and related the notes to a scale?
Do you look at the position and relate it to a scale position?

How would you know if it isn't a relative scale, if you used the above methods only since the notes would be the same?

How would you know if it isn't a different scale, if only like 5 notes are given, and a bunch of other scales have those notes too?

When you read a tablature, can you understand it in theory if you can't read standard notation?

To find the key, look at and listen to the chord progression.

Try the scales if there many can fit them. Just take a little part, and then try to continue yourself with a scale, if any note sounds bad to you, different another scale including them, too much basicly.

i find the chord progresion not the scale first
and then the key

once you have that the scales used is easy to tell

and yes you can understand the thoery behing songs if you cant read standard notation(as i did for a few monthsbecasue i was being lazy)

Just find where the song resolves, that's the key, use the scale. That's really about it.
And no, Guitar Hero will not help. Even on expert. Really.
