An x in the tab. I've googled it a lot and as far as I know it is muting the string. But do I strum during this period and with which hand do I slightly lay on the strings?

It is a ghost note.

Just touch the string slightly with your left hand at the correct fret and strum the string, this should produce a ghost note.

Hope it helped

No it's not. A ghost note is usually in parentheses unless otherwise stated. An x means mute.

Junior's usually at least a little terse, but he knows his stuff. I've always read his posts in a grouchy grandfather voice, a grouchy grandfather with a huge stiffy for alternate picking.
Besides that, he's right this time. As usual.
