After playing my newer Masterbilt for a couple weeks i decided I liked the original one better, so i put the EF-500R up for trade. I got a couple crap offers, but after a couple days I got an email from a 70 year old man who said he had a US made Ovation he wanted me to consider as a trade.

So I went to his apartment to check this thing out, not really expecting to be interested in a trade. Most of the ovations I had seen I was less than impressed with. I wasn't expecting this.

The thing is in damn near mint condition. The only thing i could find keeping it from being in showroom condition was that he scratched his old phone number into the bottom back of the roundback, but it's not very noticeable. He was the original owner, bought it from a store in 1975. Always kept in its case, always stored in humidity controlled environments. Nicest old man i've ever met...I had to ask him why he was getting rid of it. "I just want something new" was his answer.

So basically the story goes like this: I started out with an epiphone SG that i purchased off of a friend for 50$. I traded that for a washburn acoustic, which i traded for an epiphone sheraton, which i traded for an epiphone masterbilt, which i traded for this.

The model number is 1112-1, which makes it a deluxe balladeer
Serial number 119906. I've yet to figure out how to decipher that, if anyone could help me out please feel free.
Made in Connecticut, USA. The gentleman told me it was made in '75

Bottom line - I'm a very happy camper.

Nice, I'm not a real big fan of Ovations though. I don't like their round backs.

to be honest i wasn't either, and i'm still not.

no matter which way you slice it though, this is a big step up from what i traded.

worst case scenario? I have a much better bargaining chip for my next trade.

I take it back...this thing is light weight, comfortable, sounds wonderful, plays wonderfully, i'm a fan. I had only ever played new ovations and if i'm not mistaken they're made overseas now.

OMFG ! ( a hate using acronyms, especially text ones but this fits) that is a sweet deal ! i'm almost tempted to ask you to marry me, get a divorce and get weekend visitation rights to it ! you are correct the asian O's mostly stink, the US built ones are much much better. i have an asian 1778T and a US 1778t. so much cleaner sounding. i dont understand how people find em uncomfortable to play, so much easier to me with just a little adjustment to the way i sit. very lucky find for you ! HNGD !!!!!!

I knew you'd be impressed

The only thing i'm gonna change on it is the smell...guy was a heavy smoker, smells like an ash tray. That'll go away after a little while i'm sure.

1112-1 deciphered.. 1= model,1 =acoustic roundback(yes they made flatbacks too),1 =standard depth bowl(5 13/16"), 2 = deluxe balladeer. then the last one denotes color in this case 1 = dark sunburst finish. thats gotta be worth 700 US minimum. good trade.

it sounds so mellow, i love it. the masterbilt was much louder, but it was a raspy loud, like it was yelling at me. this sounds like it's singing.

i'll make a clip tomorrow morning when the baby isn't sleeping

lol ! makes sense... she won't be affected by the cold as much as the guitars. frostbite rarely ends up being fatal. i have the same problem, i only sleep an hour or so and the Blonde needs at least 9. find myself playing PS3 with no volume often. i play my electric unplugged alot at 3 am. they think sleep and sanity should come before our artistic expressions.

Thank you! It's hands down the nicest looking guitar i've owned to date.

I should have recorded my guitar teacher playing it for the sound to be done justice...he played a spanish fingerstyle song on it and i was stunned. i'm sure i'll make it sound like an entry level yamaha...but hopefully I can pull off something nice. i always try to play the songs i'm learning and not the ones i already know.

There's only 2 issues I have with it so far

1) I'll need to buy a strap because the roundback is kinda slippery (as you'll chuckle at in the video i posted)
2) It doesn't have much bass response

I think this guitar is more suited for people who play live, or amplified. It's beautiful, it's lightweight, but I did a comparison between my masterbilt and the balladeer and i don't think the ovation really stood much of a chance. Although I guess it's technically considered a semi-acoustic guitar so it was a bit out of its element without an amp...or maybe i'm just not used to it yet, i definitely feel like i played the song better on my old guitar. Like I said, my guitar teacher played it and it sounded like heaven...it's possible that it's just me.

The song i played was "my hero" by the foo fighters. I just learned it last night so it's a little rough, sorry.

Congrats on your new box, no wait, it has a rounded back, so I can't call it a box, but the sentiment remains none the less. I'm sure you will get many years of enjoyment from it.

I had to laugh at the video, it looked like it was going to get away from you a few times, you are going to have to duct tape it to yourself. That will keep being a problem until you get used to keeping the face vertical, it will force you to stop looking at your fretting fingers and helps put your arm and hand in a more proper position.

haha yeah you're correct
i have a bad habit of looking at my fingers while i play, which isn't usually a problem but on this one angles the guitar and makes it slip

Don't feel bad, everybody starts out that way, some people do it for years, I even catch myself looking once in a while.

As you keep progressing you will find yourself relying less on visual cues for finger placement. Common things that force people to quit looking are - reading lyrics, singing into a mic, sightreading, and Ovations.

I forgot to mention before that the guitar sounds great.

haha the guitar sounds like crap, at least when i play it. but thanks for trying to make me feel better.

Worst case scenario if i want to trade again i'll get something better than what i traded to get it.

my husband looks at his hands, and he's been playing for 26 years and is a damned good player. i sometimes look, too - especially when playing guitars i haven't spent a lot of time with or that have scale lengths i'm not familiar with.

i JUST realized that i can record directly from my computer, which removes the problem of a crappy mic in my camera

at least now i know where it sounds bad is because of my playing and not because of the guitar

still a nice job. the O sounds fantastic! it was designed for amplified use. even unplugged its sweet! not as much bass as most of mine, but all but 2 of mine have upper sound bouts only so that brings out the bass. the centerhole ones do lack in bass. i've never played my guitars at such an angle, even my flatbacks. i've always played vertical and slightly leaned my head over, never realized i did just that until i watched you and analyzed myself trying to figure out how you could have such a problem holding it. the

Big improvement Mike, next thing we know, you will be recording in 5.1 Dolby surround sound.

Some day when I feel ambitious, I'll have to ask you how to do that, not for Youtube, but I would like to be able to make a couple of sound files. I'm still kind of stuck in the analog world, maybe I should try to grasp onto some of these wonders of science.

You're likely to get bad audio from a webcam just like i was getting from my digi cam

I have a studio pod that i played around with for like a week then forgot about, i forgot that i can hook the guitar up to that then that up to my computer.

I think i figured out how to both use the program and play the song, so hopefully this last clip stops ovation fans from facepalming at my "sound demos"
