so if you'd have seen my thread over the past couple of days asking for Les Paul suggestions, you'd know at the end i went off on an epic tangent.

here's what i eventually bought:

fedex box, but it came via TNT... hmmmm :/

open it up to find this:

a hofner box!!!!

but i didn't buy a hofner advertised as an epiphone... did i?

open the hofner box to find...

towels and magazines... srsly?

but wait, is that a guitar neck in there!?!?!?!!?!?!?

yes

yes it is...

but what?

EPIPHONE! phew... thought someone sent me a hofner by mistake there...

can you tell what one it is yet???

here's a clue:

an Epiphone Alleykat

scored this beauty for £190 on ebay!

the seller bought it off someone about 8 months ago who only used it for a photoshoot and never played it, and by the looks of it, the seller hardly ever played it, it's in pretty much perfect condition.
still gonna get by gibson luthiers choice polish on it just because i can xD

there's 3 volume knobs and 1 tone knob on this thing, that took me about (literally) 5 minutes of playing about with them all to find out what they do and what one is for what. confusing!!!!!!!!

but anyway, it sounds gorgeous both acoustically and electronically.

P90 in the neck and normal humbucker in the bridge gives a nice variety to the sound.

my guitar was made in Korea in the Saein Plant, on August 2005 and is production Number: 3333.

from what i've read of this Saein Plant it makes some quality instruments and this alleykat did not disappoint, it's gorgeous, action is low as a snake's belly, neck is as straight as an arrow, build quality is fantastic and the hardware seems pretty decent as well.

i have absolutely no idea what strings are on the guitar, i forgot to ask the seller but they feel like 9's, i might swap em for some EB regular slinky's (10's) and see how i fare as i prefer them for my bluesy sound.

otherwise it's a great guitar! sounds gorgeous, feels amazing and looks pretty sexy too, all i'm missing now is a case, anyone wanna give me one? lol

now i'm gonna go play this thing for a few hours,

peace

- JD

Very nice! Love the finish! If I were to get another guitar, it would be a semi-acoustic. Great deal too IMO! HNGD!

Is it a P90 or a minihumbucker? :P Nice guitar though, HNGD!

i thought they were one and the same???

because i've heard both "P90" and "minihumbucker" mentioned in relation to the neck pickup

mini buckers are humbuckers made to fit in the cavity of a P-90 pick up.

p90s are big single coils, mini buckers are tiny humbuckers.

totally different puppsies.
I wondered why the frisbee was getting bigger, then it hit me.

ah fair enough, tbh then i don't have any idea...
all i DO know is it's smaller than a humbucker but bigger than a single coil xD

Looks like a minihumbucker to me. :P What's the knob near the cutaway for? :P

that's actually a good question, the knob at the cutaway is a "master" volume

the volume knob by the bridge p-up is the neck pickup volume, the other volume is the bridge pickup volume and then the other one is the only tone knob.

i think it's so you can adjust both p-up volumes individually and then have just one master volume for some other reason.................. ???

This is maybe the worst comparison in the history of comparisons.

Every guitar and bass forum I've visited has some people chasing some magical tone that will shoot jizzing unicorns riding on a rainbow out of their amp.
