So sometimes when I'm playing lately I've experienced pain in my ring finger, at and below the knuckle attaching it to my hand. It is also along the bone that runs through my palm, more on the middle finger side, but I have noticed pain between ring finger and pinky.

It isn't anything serious yet, I'm smart enough to give my hand a break, shake it out, maybe go do something else, but it'll come back again.

It especially seems to come from a legato exercise I've been working on, on the lower strings. I'm not sure if I'm stretching my hand incorrectly while playing, or really what I could be doing wrong. Pain involving the pinky comes when I'm doing sweep picking with my pinky.

Any idea what I might be doing wrong to cause this, and what I can do about it? Anyone had a similar experience? Like I said, its not serious, but it could become so, and I'd be concerned if it kept recurring long term.

I definitely think you should take a couple days off. It's tough to do, but you sound like your hands need a little break.

You could be fretting too hard or you could be pushing your hand too hard. Lighten up on your legato technique for a little bit and practice some hand stretches and massages in your warmups. I like to use Petrucci's ideas from Rock discipline:

Those warmups usually are enough to get my hand ready to go most days.

If the pain persists, I'd go see a doctor. Hand pain is never something to take lightly.

Okay, now its happening even when I'm not doing that lick... balls. I guess it means time off. Which sucks, because I was just getting into a bit of a breakthrough with my playing.

I do play predominantly with my first three fingers, my pinky is kinda useless. I guess I've been doing a lot of stuff that relies heavily on my ring finger lately... didn't think I'd have any trouble with it. Apparently I was wrong.

Balls.
