Simple Question; Do you think media like TV shows, movies, books, etc. should avoid portraying stereotypes among races, sexes, etc. even it it means sacrificing realism?

I've noticed Mad Men has gotten a little bit of criticism for some stereotypes it portrays, but having seen every episode more than once, I can tell the show does that in the name of realism, and the makers of that show go through huge lengths for strong realism and historical accuracy.

Mad Men isn't a totally fair example, as it takes place in the '60s, and we're more forgiving of that sort of thing with fiction that takes place in the past. But If a show or something takes place in the present, it's harder to get away with.

Well Madmen's are very real to the time period is was made in, so yes. But then you have a show like The Walking Dead with so many stupid stereotypes it's ridiculous.

no, because art is a form of social commentary and so are stereotypes. stereotypes are art if you will.

Some stereotypes are SUPER accurate though... I won't list any to avoid getting flamed/banned though But ya, a fair portion of them are unfounded.

Agreed. There's a balance between being true-to-life, and being hilariously racist. There's Mad Men, then there's Ice Tea from SVU (I don't think that's a great example, but whatever).

And yet again, you are wrong. Very rarely do stereotypes come from absolutely nowhere, but from real life experiences.

realism = empiricism
real life experiences = anecdotal evidence
anecdotal evidence =/= empiricism

For real. I still watch it cuz I have nothing better to do, but it's not as amazing as so many people think.

I still like the show, it has its entertaining moments that are surrounded in lame boring crap, but in the end it's worth watching. Not excellent, but it's good sometimes.
