If it were possible we would be having visits from our future selves. You can say "well that means we haven't discovered it yet" Well if you go into the future then somebody would have, if time travel exists then that means everything has already happened and everything we are doing now, has already been done millions of times, so my hypothesis is one of two.

1. It is not possible to time travel

or

2. Our future is that we all went extinct before we could discover it

This can mean that we might be able to create a time travel machine and go back in time before we went extinct and stop extinction and change future, but wouldn't make my two hypothesis' false?

Why would someone come back from the future to this present time. This isn't exactly a Hitler-tier-better-change-this-event-in-history moment in time. Not even close.

So we can save ourselves? Explore? Maybe teach our past selves in the 1100s all of our current technology, so when time passes to present of that time traveler, we will be hundreds of years more advanced.

That would mean we don't really have free will and everything we do is pre planned and is destined to happen.

It wouldn't be worth the risk just to speed up something that had already happened. There is no reason at all to speed up progress that happened in the past.

Or it's Back To The Future style, we're in the crappy timeline that doesn't get hoverboards in three years, and the time travelers are just smart enough to blend in and try to avoid drastically altering history, as literally entire film sagas can be made about the efforts to repair such damage.

If we were to invent time travel, it would only be possible to travel backwards to the point the first time machine worked.
It would create a loop in time starting at that point.
We'd be free to travel back to the point it was opened, but no further.

Time travel forward is possible.

If an astronaut leaves on a 10 year mission and travels a certain rate of speed (I forget the exact number) the entire mission, when he came home, 100 years would have passed on Earth, while only 10 passed for him because time slows down as velocity increases.

Furthermore it would be difficult to do. You couldn't show the smartest smarty-pants in 1100 an Ipad and teach him to reverse engineer it. They would have no basis in even simple electronics. Hell they wouldn't know more than some mechanics.

Moreover, no one is really capable of demonstrating how to build one whole thing because everything is so specialized. Various people can build parts of things and another person can assemble those parts into a final product, but I doubt that anyone alive can make an entire airplane from scratch.

The moment you travel back in time, you create a new timeline in a new universe, which explains why you can go back and kill your father.

So no, we're not being visited by our future selves anytime soon. Or at all for that matter. Either that or time travel has been outlawed and the punishment is something so cruel that we only discover in the future.

Something about time-travel that nobody ever seems to realize:

Our planet is in motion and assuming time travel would fix your location, traveling back in time just an hour would place you out in space.

If we're working in a hypothetical scenario that has scientists smart enough to figure out how to bend time, it's not too much of a stretch to assume they can bend space too.

But wouldn't he still age as a person? I never really understood this. Just because a clock goes slower doesn't mean actual 'time' does. A clock is just mechanical and I can make my clock 2 hours later than it actually is, that doesn't mean me older.

How does this work?

It's not that just a clock slows down; everything slows down. Time has a lesser effect on the person as speed increases.

Or, the way that we've discovered to time travel is to find two ends of a stable wormhole, accelerate one to near lightspeed so it remains almost at a certain point in time (to an outside observer), while letting the other end age normally.

Then there would be time travel, but you would only be able to travel back to a point at which we first accelerated one end of the wormhole to lightspeed. Since we haven't done that yet, no time travel yet.

Time travel is impossible because time in itself doesn't truly exist. It is a concept made by man to understand the way of the world and to organize how daily events would pan out according to the weather and light.
Days are just the world turning and years are just the world orbiting the sun. A day is not a factor of time but a calculation of how the world functions. Time is only an invention.
Is time travel possible in space? Possibly. On earth? I doubt it.

Not to be too off topic, but we don't have free will anyway in the philosophical sense, as I don't believe it's consistent with the Monism suggested by science.

How does this work?

A clock is just a way to measure time.
It doesn't dictate it.
The astronaut will still age, yes, but relatively slowly.
Time is a natural force in the universe, and one we don't understand very well.

Here's a better explanation than I could offer.

No, time is a real and present force in the universe.
Recording the passage of time is our invention, and the way we record it, but time is very real.

No, time exists. Our measurement of it is invented, but it is still a component of the universe. Just because we measure distance doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
