Does it help much if I get a Black Tusq XL GraphTech nut for my LTD V-50? Or are those mainly for floating bridge guitars? They say those will improve the open string tone, but I dont play open string that much. So is it really worth getting a GraphTech nut?

if you're upgrading from plastic if will improve your guitars sustain

if you already have any type of bone nut you probably won't notice a difference

I put the same nut on my V-300. This one, to be specific. It improved tuning stability and maybe a little be of sustain and was easy to install. I say go for it.

Did you require to file the nut to fit, or was it a direct fit to the guitar?

If you have no problems with your stock nut, it probably isn't worth replacing. The GraphTech stuff is VERY nice for strats (and anything with a vintage trem) where tuning stability can be a problem. Anything else however, it's not really worth the upgrade in my opinion.
