Dutch scientists have used stem cells to create strips of muscle tissue with the aim of producing the first lab-grown hamburger later this year.

The aim of the research is to develop a more efficient way of producing meat than rearing animals.

At a major science meeting in Canada, Prof Mark Post said synthetic meat could reduce the environmental footprint of meat by up to 60%.

"We would gain a tremendous amount in terms of resources," he said.

Professor Post's group at Maastricht University in the Netherlands has grown small pieces of muscle about 2cm long, 1cm wide and about a mm thick.

They are off-white and resemble strips of calamari in appearance. These strips will be mixed with blood and artificially grown fat to produce a hamburger by the autumn.

Meat without the killing. Thoughts?

Let's say you can get it for the same price as animal meat, would you eat this instead? How would you feel if this was on average, slightly higher priced than normal priced, would you eat synthetic meat instead? Or maybe you wouldn't eat this at all?

I think I'd try it and see how it was. I'm a little weirded out at the idea and have questions on how it was... synthesized, but I can see it working and might phase out killing animals entirely for meat. As long as it tastes and feels the same it's alright.

That would be pretty fantastic, but I still don't know if I would eat a ton of it. I only eat meat every couple of days, but it isn't for ethical reasons so much as health reasons.
I've decided that my signature is terrible. I'm open to suggestions.

Heh. Rearing animals.

You, good sir, have not gone over to your friends house after a hard night of drinking to find 2 dudes passed out in the same room both holding their own flaccid cocks in hand, passed out, with porn on the tv.

As long as it tastes the same, has the same health values and is cheaper/just as much as normal meat I couldn't give two shits.

Can't wait to enjoy some cloneburger.

Up until the point that it turns out that somehow cloning meat rapidly increases the amount of prions in food, and we all become infected with a rampant aberration of Mad Cow Disease.

If it felt and tasted the same, and was the same price, I don't see why I wouldn't eat it.

Takes the charm out of eating meat, don't you think? Plus, you need the physical animal to have eaten things that cover the foodchain below itself... how do you replicate that in lab?

If it tastes the same and is nutritionally the same as well as having no odd effects on my body because of its synthetic origins, I'd eat it.

I will not try this. Absolutely not. I don't even have processed cheese, let alone synthetic meat. Sounds revolting. I'd rather eat a raw real steak than a cooked piece of synthetic bullshit.

If you'd like to assert your position in the food chain you can always go outside and punch a cow now and then.

We could take all the farm raised cows and make them fight to the death in gladiatorial combat since we'd have no need for them.

i'd be worried somewhere down the line that they'd find it has nasty side effects or messes with you in some way. It probably wouldn't, but eh.

What if the animals grow accustomed to the taste for blood and then turn on human beings?

Like pretty much everything else the answer is complex, but the probability that "Frankenfood" will have a major role in our diet 100 years from now is pretty high. Who will eat it? Starving people in rural African villages? Probably. Wealthy Americans or Europeans who have the luxury of selecting their food? Hmm... maybe.

Right now the trend is to think, "Oh, yuck!" but who is to say that it won't become the new truffles, the next luxury food for the elite?

That's a low probability, but a possibility nonetheless.

The science is complicated, and the medical and public health issues will be an order of magnitude more complex still, but nothing is more complex than the mysterious breeze of human perceptions. There is virtually no reliable evidence linking vaccination to any type of cognitive defect, yet a couple of yahoos from Hollywood have generated a lot of noise that it's going to definitely cause your child to develop Autism. At the same time there is substantial evidence that the effects of consuming High Fructose Corn Syrup are biochemically and physiologically indistinguishable from drinking alcohol, yet millions of moms give their babies bottles filled with Mountain Dew so they'll shut up.

Whether genetically or otherwise-modified food products will ever become a viable industry will be decided in this rather fickle court of public opinion. Given the popularity of science fiction and the "20/20" or "Nightline" rush of learning that "YOU'RE GONNA DIE, DIE, DIE!!!" some horrible death because of some innocuous household item I would expect these foods to have a very hard time making it to the shelves of your grocery store.

Specialty markets? High-end luxury establishments? Not-for-profits? Absolutely. These are wide open arenas that are not nearly so limited by the overwhelming voices of media.

Of course you'll have greenpeace and the daily mail spreading all kinds of lies, but I think ultimately synthetic meat will enter the market with some, incremental, success. I would not be surprised if synthetic meat get categorized with class, gender and social group values. Like it's for "educated", middle-class people who are aware of the environment etc. I can't see synthetic meat taking off with all groups of people. In some countries with a strong tradition of eating meat you might have little to no gains at all introducing synthetic meat to the market, while in countries like Sweden you'll have more luck.

If it's cloned meat then it's identical to normal meat, I fail to understand the 'eww, synthetic food!' argument.

You don't need to murder an animal to attain blood, and plus you could make blood synthetically too.

Id like synthetic meat more, as long as it tastes and feels okey. But I barely eat meat as it is.

I would have thought the article would have pointed out if it was going to be synthesised (as it did with the artificial fat).

And I don't know why I said murder. In fact I purposefully meant not to say it but did anyway. In any case if real animal blood was to be used then it would make sense to harvest the entire animal.
