i've got a 2.5 year old hp pavillion laptop and i'm having issues with my disc drive. it's recently been ripping cds far slower than normal and can't recognize dvds. i've tried cleaning the laser lens with alcohol but still nothing. help?
Bad drivers? Try reinstalling them. Would also suggest burning an Ubuntu live-CD on to a thumb drive and testing your CD drive through a linux OS. If Ubuntu can handle the drive just fine, it's your Windows drivers that are at fault.

You know your shouldn't touch the laser lens at all, right? Cleaning it really should be done with compressed air or nothing.

However, chances are it's a driver issue, it's rare for a physical issue to be specific to format types.
