Im making a song. first i was making guitar melodies and i made one that i liked. but instead I decided to make that melody the one for my vocals. so I sang that melody and recorded it. now I'm trying to think what I should do for the guitar melody. Nothing is sounding right besides that same melody on top of it. but ive heard it isn't always good to make the vocal and guitar melodies the same. regardless I would like to know what some rules are in terms of notes that work together. for example my melody vocal goes...

A:---5-1--1-
E:-3-----3--5

what notes can could I use for guitar? i want to use chords though. do I use the pentatonic scale but with chords if that's even possible? what notes will and wont work? I'm ok at the guitar but I lack in the theory department.

thanks

Maybe try a G minor chord over that melody.

Maybe play the same as the vocal melody but an octave higher ?

A set of chords then be used with any of those notes basically.
