Kevin Rudd, former Aus pm was overthrown by Julia Gillard in 2010 but is now making a comeback

Australian politcs is funny.

Seriously it's ridiculous. Here's the background for those who don't know:

In 2007 Labour, led by the milky bar kid Kevin Rudd, swept into power after 11 years of John Howard as being pm. In the aftermath he had the highest approval ratings ever recorded. This continued for about 2 years until a serious of setbacks and policy failures saw his approval rating drop [it was still well above the oppositions however].
Rudd lost the support of the labour caucus and was removed as pm in 2010, with his deputy Julia Gillard taking over as pm. This was put down in part due to the low polling of Rudd and also due to his leadership style.
Labour retained government after the 2010 elections with a minority government reliant on independents. Rudd became foreign minister and Julia has always had a low approval rating.

And here's the current standings:

In public polls Rudd is way more popular than Gillard, and always has been. Labour has very low approval rating as well. So this week, amid speculation as to whether Rudd would challenge for the leadership, several senior labour figures came out and publicly criticized Rudd. Rudd than resigned whilst in the US, and has since flown home to talk to his supporters and family about possible challenging. Gillard has called for a leadership ballot to be held on Monday, where Rudd is expected to challenge but unlikely to win.

It's all over the news here, but surprisingly difficult to find a decent article about it.

This is an ok one.

But anyway, whilst this is going on the opposition leader Tony Abbott is standing around somewhere looking like this:

And is in a great place to win the next election. Unfortunately his policies suck.

So what are others opinions of this?
It seems to me that Rudd has the support of the people, but Gillard has the support of labour. I doubt that Rudd will win the ballot, but I think he'll mount a second challenge closer to the election, or perhaps after the election.

I think should Gillard and Rudd should have some sort of pokemon battle to see who gets to be the leader of the Labour party.

Same. But mainly what I was trying to put across through the thread was how absurd it is for labour to get themselves into this position.

I am loling about the whole situation. I definitely appreciated Rob Oakeshott's comment about calling Malcom Turnbull if Rudd gets the leadership back. I would actually vote liberal if he was leader.

Turnbull is a much better politician than Abbott imo.

The thing is that everyone's calling for the situation to go away after the ballot, but in my mind the only way for it to go away is for Rudd to become leader. Gillard's telling him to go to the backbench and stay there when he loses, but I seriously doubt he will.

I'm torn. I realise how laughable it is if Rudd is re-elected but I still think that would be better than Gillard the pathological liar.

Apparently they can. I definitely liked Kevin Rudd more than I do Julia Gillard, she's such a lying bitch.
