Steve Vai. Yngwie Malmsteen. Paul Gilbert.

All quite capable of writing good songs but known for their instrumental chops. Vai writes most of his backing music, I know. Not familiar enough with the other 2 to know what they do.

40% of steve's solo music isn't instrumental, and practically none of the music he played with other bands was instrumental.

Peter Green and Jeff Beck, I Love Peter green but he himself admitted that he was lucky with his songs, and Jeff beck I'm not a fan of but he is regarded that way

Well... A person who writes music without lyrics is a composer, not a songwriter. While someone who writes lyrics but no music is a lyricist. While a songwriter is someone who does both.

Notation. Duhh!!

Wat

Well, there's only one classic rock song that's ever been written, and all every classic rock artist ever does is improvise on it, so one can't really call it songwriting, right?
