With that thread about Chris Brown, I sort of realized my own hypocrisy with how I disliked Chris Brown and had little respect for him, yet at the same time I still love The Beatles and listen to them a lot, and John Lennon was not only adulterous but abusive as well.

Anyways, can you forgive a musicians behavior? Or do you say "Yeah, he's a shitbag but the music is good?" Or will you totally stop listening to a person's music because of their behavior?

Most of us here in The Pit think Chris Brown is indisputably a jackass, and I'm not disagreeing. So at what point do you differentiate between "He made a mistake, cut him some slack" and "He's forever a prick"? Doesn't have to be just with musicians.

I just noticed that a lot of your threads have a three-paragraph format, with the second being slightly shorter than the other two.

EDIT: Oh right, topic. I can't look past big personal flaws in musicians, no matter how good they are. Like I love Bad Brains, but I would never give them any money because of the homophobia. And Harrison ftw.

Didn't we just have a thread about this? I could have sworn we did.

OT: I'm pretty good at compartmentalizing, so behavior doesn't really affect my interpretation of the music.

Hmm, first literary analysis on my threads. First time for everything.

I like to separate beliefs from artwork.

Im an atheist, but that doesn't make Da Vinci any less talented.

If i think someone is a genuinely horrible person, such as John Lennon, then i won't listen to the music. It ruins it, John Lennon is only this way for the irritating preachyness he did too, i could understand him doing bad stuff then trying to move away from it but he should have shut the **** up instead of pretending he's some peace loving man..

I need to be able to have some relation to certain kinds of music, if the artist is just full of shit then it destroys the message.

I don't know much about Chris Brown (but he is a prick based off what I know).

I forgive them when they stop repeating their actions. For example, everybody still hates Kanye West for the whole Taylor Swift thing, but I just look at that and say "Okay, he does some really stupid shit, but I won't hate him for it".

If I had a problem with how musicians conduct their affairs then I certainly wouldn't listen to as much Mozart or Liszt as I do.

Kanye West is a douchebag. But I love his music to death. So no, not really.

People I know, on the other hand... I don't forgive easily. I still have grudges from school. Sounds childish, and it probably is, but I find it very difficult to accept people who have been absolute cockslaps to me in the past.

...What's wrong with those guys?

I slammed Brown, but let me make this distinction: I said we should not support him as a celebrity and an acceptable public figure. That doesn't mean you can't enjoy his music for what it is. It's a matter of ethos and social acceptability, not one of art.

John Lennon is dead and I don't go around singing his praises or contributing to his mythos. Because of that, I don't feel guilty or hypocritical for enjoying a good chunk of the music he made.

I think being deeply insecure with lots of problems and wanting to become famous so that everyone likes you, are synonymous.

True dat.

I guess it depends on the severity, but I can't think of too many artists I listen to who routinely make decisions that I question or disagree with, so I can't say I have much of an opinion on the issue.

Plus with womanizing, if I boycott somebody's output for that, then there goes 90-95% of all famous people in general.

It was Lennons first wife that he beat. I'm not saying he never hit Yoko, I just haven't ever heard that he did.

You can actually hear it in their recordings. He beat her in the studio and that's why she sounded that way.

I feel kind of bad even making a joke about that after getting up on my soapbox today. Oh well, I wear hypocrisy well enough.

Yea I'm pretty sure he made the exact same thread before.

Depends on the extent of it and the issue. I can usually ignore it and enjoy the music but I can't do that with a few people. And irl I find it really hard to forgive people for things.

Ah. Explains Revolution 9.

Worst song I've ever heard. I was listening to The Beatles on shuffle, then after about two minutes of that crap I realised something was horribly wrong. Deleted that mother fucker right away.

Huge fan of Axl Rose. The man is a genius. Don't agree with everything he's done (though the hate for him is unfair at times) but that does not stop me from loving his vocals, the music he makes and the songs he sings.

I think someone like Garry Glitter probably represents that point.

Dave Mustaine must be sligtly retarded, but I still like his music. To be honest, I listen to the music if it is good, regardless of the artist(s)'s behaviour.

I mean, if Burzum wasn't shit, I'd listen to it even though I am fairly aware that Vikernes is a horrible, horrible person.

That bitch looks like a cracked out chihuahua.

Edit: A little clarification.

You, good sir, have not gone over to your friends house after a hard night of drinking to find 2 dudes passed out in the same room both holding their own flaccid cocks in hand, passed out, with porn on the tv.
