So new posters posting pictures of scat porn has become incredibly common in the last week and I am close to rethinking my decision to post on this site. Can you require posters to have 5 or 10 posts before they can post pictures?

Not really. not allowing images until the next 5-10 posts won't stop people from posting that shit.

As said, this wouldn't really help. The users will very quickly just make 5 spam posts, then go back to posting the pictures.

It's also incredibly frustrating to sign up to a website you think will finally be able to answer your question about wiring your selector switch, only to find that you need to make 5 posts or wait 5 days before you can post the photo you took.

Unfortunately there's not much more we can do than report the post and move on. You can stop images from showing in threads if you want, though - Control Panel > Edit Options > "Visible Post Elements".

I don't think it'd solve the problem, anyway.

Maybe if a reported post contains an image it could be automatically blocked and an option to view it along with a warning could be in its place until a mod has judged it?

My suggestion is to forbid images and to allow other questions. And my idea is that after 3 days of waiting most spamers would probably get bored and just forget about their original idea to post their favorite disgusting picture.

This could be a good idea. Also helps the limiting the reported mails mods get, since users seem to think that reporting a post 300 times gets it removed faster.

I've been off work the last week so I've been clearing down my e-mail throughout the week. Came into work and it picked up over 500 e-mails from the last week. It does get excessive at times. I'm sure it's been worse in the past though.

Also, an offensive image's URL could be banned from the site. That won't get rid of similes, but the specific offensive picture with the same URL will at least be unpostable.

Something like this could definitely be a good idea.

I think what Frenchy was saying is that let's say a new user has a problem that requires a picture to solve, he used a wiring related question as an example. It's many, many times easier to determine the solution from a picture rather than a text based explanation, so it doesn't seem fair to some new user that maybe needs help right at that moment.

Also, it's mainly been the same guy for the last three months spamming disgusting pictures, so I doubt waiting three days will really stop him, since he could just make a few accounts, wait a few days, and then start posting or something.

If it was a bot spamming scat pictures, that could work, but it's a real person. Like I said, he's been at it for quite awhile, so I'm sure captchas won't discourage him.

Okay, I've got an idea:
What about every image being blocked when posted and has to be approved by a mod or the TS before it is shown on the thread?

-What if TS or a Mod isn't around, especially in an old thread where the TS might be permabanned or hasn't logged on in years, or a very low traffic forum with just two moderators? It might take quite awhile for anyone to get around to it.

-And then it still goes back to what Frenchy said. What if someone needs a picture for something right then and there? The wiring issue pictures is still a great example.

-Or perhaps someone wants to include a chart/graph as evidence in some discussion. That's not quite as urgent, but having to wait could really ruin the flow of the discussion.

-And plus if it is a large thread contain a large number of pictures, that would be an annoyingly large amount of work for whoever has to approve it.

-Again, this is more of an inconvenience for regular users than it is a deterrent for trouble makers.

Like mentioned before a "show picture" button for members that haven't been here for at least a week/month would work best. It would allow people to bypass the NSFW content and it wouldn't slow down the page's loading time for people who are replying to the thread and have already seen the pictures

I like this idea.
I also think it might be worth showing that a post has been reported. It might stop people reporting the same post multiple times - which I'm sure gets annoying for the mods. And remove any ambiguity as to whether someone has already reported said post.

I really don't like the idea of having to wait before you can post images - the only way I can see that as being viable is by limiting that to the pit - but I can't see that solving the problem at all; and it's still an annoyance.
I also don't like the idea of having every image needing to be screened before it can be viewed or anything like that.
The idea of having captchas for every image is also something I don't recommend. Most 'adbots' and most people who post scat porn aren't bots at all.

That's the whole point of putting

*Reported*

in a post. I think the problem is that people assume that when a post is reported, a mod will magically pop out of nowhere to deal with it.

This is made more confusing by the fact that many people don't seem to realize that regular mods (green) only have moderating powers in their assigned forums. It becomes more confusing due to the fact that they can still ban users, so someone will ban the offensive user, but the thread remains open, leading to much confusion.

So if there are no Pit mods (or S Mods/Admins) around, and the thread doesn't get closed within 2 seconds of being reported, people feel the need to report the same post again, despite the fact that someone has cleared posted

*Reported*

in that thread referring to the offensive post already.

Well, you usually pick up ad & spam posts on the first entry. So,why not hold off on allowing new users to post pictures for ten posts. Other forums ask users to wait a few posts before links can be inserted, and what is an offensive image, if not a link?

It wouldn't really inconvenience a new user to any great degree, denying links of images, (or image uploads), for a short while.

If a member joined just to get an opinion on a guitar or other piece of equipment, he or she will just have to be patient, kick back, and shoot the shit for a couple of posts..

(Yeah, I know the old cliche, "shoot the shit", was an awful pun in a thread about scat porn. So what, )?

It bloody well can. I think it's one of the most annoying features I've found on forums, and puts me completely off using them.

Think of it this way: a new member registers to ask a question about information on some old beat up guitar they found in the attic. He wants to post a picture to identify the guitar and determine if it's worth fixing up, but finds he can't for ten posts. There are two things that could likely happen.

A) The user says "screw this" and goes to ask the question at not-so-ultimate-guitar.com and from that time on uses that other forum instead of this one.

B) The user posts 10 quick spam posts. This could result in a warning or disapproval of forum regulars, which could put the new user at odds with the community from the get go. Plus the spam posts would just mess up the forums.

And like I've pointed out in this thread already, the guy that's been making the majority of the offensive posts has been doing this for months, just making new accounts under different IP addresses. What's to stop that guy from just making 10 quick spam posts and then posting whatever disgusting thing he wants?

Again, that solution is more of an inconvenience for people that want to actually use the site than a deterrent for trouble makers. As my psychiatrist used to say, the side effects shouldn't hurt you more than the cure helps you, and if that is the case, that's clearly not a good solution.
