This is something pretty damn special.

HEY! it's a Hiwatt...

no, wait... it's a Real Hiwatt

thats right, it's one of the Hylight Electronics Hiwatts. Gold solder, Partridge Transformers, hand wired turret board, amazing amp.

You say: "shut up and show us some gut shots"

ok, i can do that

that's so nice and pretty.

i don't think i need to wax on and on about how badass this amp sounds, but i will.

first off, pretty simple controls: individual volume knobs for 'normal' and 'brill' inputs ('brill'... how proper). 3 band EQ with a presence knob and [gasp] a master volume.

the amp has quite a bit of volume, but is incredibly useable and you don't need to crank the hell outta it to sound good (unlike my JTM45 clone and my sunn 1200S). i prefer to 'jump' the inputs and use both the normal and brill channels. this amp doesn't really have much distortion, it sounds surprisingly clear even with all the volume cranked to 10 (with quite a bit of grit and breakup that clears up nicely when you roll back the volume knob).

this amp sounds incredibly spanky with single coils (ceramic single coils for extra spank, alnico singles sound warmer and a bit less edgy) while humbuckers really thicken this amp up and help temper the spanky tones.

i have used it with a couple cabs: my orange ppc212 with webers (silver and blue) and an oversized peavey with Reeves purples. this amp seems to prefer less speaker breakup/higher powered spekers, as the response stays more crisp and attacks stays unmuddied.

it takes pedals like a champ; tried boosts, OD's, fuzz and my ultravibe through it to great effect. actually got some enviable modern sounding tones using this approach. sounds incredibly thick with fuzzes (especially with the reeves). that little bit of OD from the ultravibe really thickened the amp up quite beautifully, that was actually my fave tone with the amp so far.

in conclusion, i actually like other amps i own when approaching that era specific 60's rock tone (my JTM45 or 18 wattter for example). personally i think this amp was way ahead of it's time and is one of the most usable and versatile 'old-school' amps i have played. this amp is a tone workhouse (in any era) that i will use to play my music, not something that is bought to pretend i am gilmour/townsend.

I'll have to put the Classic T models on my to-try list. Shame the finish options there are Anachronism Gold, Nuclear Waste and Aged Clown, because in principle the plaintop is right up my alley.

Now this is a NAD!!

Do you have an attenuator gumbi? Those things sound unbelievable cranked but without an attenuator you can only hear it for a couple of minutes before your ears pack it in.

no attenuator. i tend to run the preamps around 6 to 7 with the master around 7 or 8 to help temper it. and yes, it gets some really good spank running that way.

this thing very surprisingly sounds good even when you have to roll back the master volume. it is the most usable vintage amp i have used. that is one thing that really edges it out over amps like my sunn, you can save yourself considerable ear bleed.

that being said, i still crank it all to 10 with every cabinet i try it with. glorious.

sorry, no fuzz, maybe some other time. and i also ended up using my orange PPC212 instead of the reeves, i just like it better. the univibe was a Fulltone deja vibe 2, the OD was the TS side of a Jeckyll and Hyde. the guitar is a Suhr T2 Classic.

I don't know if my body can take all this jelly.

Seriously, I've been GASing for something loud and vintage, first there was a Music Man RD112 converted to a head on my craigslist, and then THIS.
