So I recently purchased a used peavey off of kijiji and i've never used a tube amp before.
can someone help me find a good tone on it? I use a zoom gfx-1 multi efx pedal for dist its not the greatest but it'll do for now, the dist is set to 20/30 and volume on the pedal is set to 40/50
what would you recommend the presence, resonance, post, high, mid, low and pre to be set to?
oh and i tried using it through the loop in the back but when i plug it in the volume is extremely quiet

Why in gods name would you not use the distortion on the amp? That's the only reason a 6505+ exists.....

Those 6505+'s are renowned for their distortion, and thats pretty much it. Ditch multi fx pedal for distortion and use a footswitch for the 6505+.

should i have the pre higher than the post? or other way around

post = volume, pre = gain (distortion)
when playing in home post is below 2 (anything more will break windows in my room), but because of low volume distortion is not so good. pre is about 5-6
