For Call of Duty type games, film scores from composers like James Horner and Michael Giacchino works very well.

...modes and scales are still useless.

I like ingame music. Though, in racing games the music gets quite repetitive so I start playing all the random hyper crap on my ipod
^^ Hahah, I'm just kidding.. or am I?

Yeah, now that I think about it, the OP is kind of insulting. I mean, a lot of games have composers who've specifically created scores tailored to the game. In that kind of situation, why would you block that?

Jason Graves' score for Dead Space, but played over other games. Whoever knew Pokemon could be so sinister.

Iron Tribal - Mobthrow

Different parts of that song always bring different games to my mind, so I figure it'd go well with games

As an example, look up the ATV Offroad Fury soundtrack. That kicked ass.

This.

Also Burnout Paradise, Saints Row 3, and any Tony Hawk game.

When I play COD online or play like Gears I listen to something intense like Of Mice & Men or Asking Alexandria. When playing games like Skyrim or even Zelda, I'll listen to the in game music. In fact, I can play a good amount of songs from Majoras Mask on Piano. Lol.

For shoot'em ups:

-extreme music, like Meshuggah or Anaal Nathrakh
-chill, atmospheric music like Burial and Boards of Canada

That's about it. Either heavy as hell or chilling as purgatory.
Also, many games have music in said game for a reason I'd never turn the music off in Zelda. You crazy?

Most of the games I play already have bitchin' sound tracks, so putting anything over it is just doesn't feel right.

Try playing a Metroid or Silent Hill game without the soundtrack, and all of a sudden everything just feels flat and lacking.

I agree, the only games where I listen to other music are the ones that don't have original scores.

I pushed up on the d pad by accident so my horse somehow made its way to Mexico. I decided "meh, my horse is faster, I'll ride it for the rest of the way".
Then the song ended.

As the case with Dead Space, maybe I don't feel like listening to the dark ambient textures Jason Graves has come up with; maybe I want to listen to surf rock while I chop necromorphs to bits?

Or when playing an old school game, I want to listen to something a bit less dated than Commodore 64 chiptunes and repeating melodies?

It just creates a different experience when playing

Listening to Tool has always done it for me when I play BF3

I'd imagine Dubstep would be pretty badass for shooters/racing games or something that's supposed to fast pace and exhilariting

If the music cues weren't so important to gameplay I'd say Cannibal Corpse and Left 4 Dead, but I'd kinda like to get a heads-up when the tank's on the way.
