So I'm taking my guitar to get the nut filed next week. I started using heavy gauged strings because I drop tune, and now the strings don't fit in the nut. My question is, should I buy a new pre cut nut and put that on my guitar and let the luthier slot that one or do I really need a new nut? My guitar stays in tune really well so is it worth it?

don't see why you'd need a new nut. unless the one on your guitar is really crappy, soft plastic, I don't really see why you'd need a new one.

Well, do the strings near the nut fret themselves with the weight of your finger?

If they don't, yes, you need a new nut.
