the night I got used to my mother crying

I named my dog after the sky

the fields along the highway were graveyards
whose wheat were bones

the stars that used to socket eyes
shone like stones
in a river I was under
or over I don't remember

I just know I wasn't there to bury her

halfway across the country trying to carry the crucifix of her memory

the boulder is always harder to push
the second time
you did not rise

my toes slid in the wet gravel
and the tower of babel of my voicebox fell to gasps of chest heaves

of lunatic chatter

the atoms of burning skin on the wind spoke
from Spokane to Yonkers
from Detroit to Mexico City
your life was not pretty
but yours was the only body heat that kept me happy
when no one else would look at me

you loved me

dude, this song is really sad. it's really really well written, and I hope it sounds good when you sing it.
