I have a Royal Atlantic and I LOVE HOW IT CLIPS, the most alive sound I've heard; now to the point, sometimes I need a real clean sound and sometimes the clipped one. The guitar volume pot is not giving me the results I'm looking for. How can I have both sounds without needing to go back to my amp and move the gain pot? An overdrive? A boost? A clean boost? I don't need a different EQ or color, I just want to have both sounds and to switch between them with ease. Please, don't tell me to get an extra RA because that's not gonna happen anytime soon xD.

a boost would do the trick, but have you tried using the volume pot on your guitar?

Read his post a second time.

Yep, the volume pot on my guitar changes the character of my sound, so I do need something different. Since I don't know exactly how an amp works I wonder if theres actually a way to get what I'm looking for, the way this amps naturally clips just drives me crazy (in a good way). For the record, I want to switch between those EXACTLY tones I'm talking about.

guy_tebache: Any boost you recommend? Something not too fancy please xD.

why don't you use one channel for cleans and the other channel for distortion?

it's a two channel amp right.

It is, but these two sounds I'm talking about are on clean channel, I want to switch between the very clean sound and the "starting to breaking up" one, I don't know if I'm expressing myself correctly, when I raise the gain (at 3 o'clock) on channel 1 it clips beautifully, I want that. I'm already covered on gain with channel two and its two modes.

My question on the boost pedal: will it get THAT sound, I mean, I know the amp clips when you push it harder, but is it the same raising the drive than using the boost? Will the boost give me a different or the exact same clipped sound I get turning up the gain on the clean channel?

You could mod the amp so that you can control the gain via a foot pedal. Figure out the resistance the gain pot has at the two settings you like, then wire up the remote with resistors of one value on one side of a stomp switch and the other value on the other. Wire in another stomp switch in series to switch between that and your normal gain pot.

Should be a fairly simple project, but it may void your warranty

Pretty interesting actually! But no mods for the moment. Thank you anyway, It's a really good suggestion anyway.

I recommend an eq pedal, and use the overall gain to cut the signal, and use the eq to add back what you feel is missing when you use the volume knob.

OK, fair enough. Then build a robot to twist the knob for you at the push of a stomp button.

Much easier than it sounds, so only half-kidding. Just need a stepper motor and a few other parts. There are other ways even easier (with regular motors), but they'd be less reliable.

You can't find the time, in the entire set, to stand by your amp and turn the knob a little bit?

I plan on playing 3 instruments at once because I can't find people to play with. Least you can do is turn a knob a little bit for your lead. Just give yourself an an extra measure, the audience will love how real your playing is.

Set the Clean channel clean, then when you want broken up cleans, hit it with a boost. That's what I do with my Mesa and Sparkle Drive. The Sparkle Drive is great because it has a clean blend knob. Lubs dat pedlul. I sorta want to, but that's really freaking redundant.

try a volume pedal. run the amp at the clipped sound u like and run the volume pedal into the front of it and back it off for cleans. other than that i suggest what everyone else has suggested. get a boost pedal.
