Washburn D10SCE - http://www.joondalupmusic.com.au/productDetail.asp?id=2072

or Cort MR710F - http://www.allansbillyhyde.com.au/prod/100/MR710F/Cort_MR710F_Dreadnought_Cutaway_Acoustic_Guitar_%28Natural%29.aspx

Or any other brands/guitars you can recommend?

I dont have anything to say about any of yours but you may want to check out some waldens, there really great to play and just seem like great guitars, im not sure what one would be best for you in your price range and stuff but the one ive got has a pick up in it and has held together pritty well, that was $650AUD though so try some out
Ibanez RG470AHZ
Squire Strat
Walden G630CE

Blackstar HT-40
Marshal MG30FX

If you're interested in a Fender, I'd check out the "Sonoiran SCE" also. It has a solid spruce top, and a groovy, (for want of a better term), all maple, Strat style neck.

Most, if not all Fenders, are quite bright sounding. Be aware of this as you make your decision.

Your CD100-CE choice has a laminated top.

If it were out of those guitars listed what do you recon?

When you say "second guitar", would you have this in addition to your main guitar (an electric?), or to replace your current acoustic?

Would the Epiphone Masterbilt guitars be within that budget? The DR500MCE seems to be around GBP430 here.

http://www.epiphone.com/Products/Acoustics/Masterbilt.aspx

Perhaps Tanglewood TW115ASCE.

http://www.tanglewoodguitars.co.uk/products/acoustic/premier/tw115/TW115ASCE.html

I believe a couple of the masterbuilts are... Shop around OP.

and ALWAYS ask when you are buying what the BEST price they can sell the thing for. If it a small store chances are they will take money off, as it means you will be more pleased to buy from them rather than the bigger chains.
you can trust me on that, I work is a store.

No.

Well, technically it could be done, but only in the same way that you could change a cat into a hamburger. It's an unpleasant process, and nobody is happy with the result.

The Fender CD100 is an all laminate. The mids and the very little bit of bass range it has sounds dull and lifeless.

The Washburn has a solid spruce top. It has the most tone balance of the three and has the best tone imo.

The Cort also has a solid spuce top. Being very heavey on the bass end, it overpowers the mids and highs that already lack much definition to begin with, giving it a rather muddy sound.

For a CE guitar, I highly recommend you try out either the Yamaha A1M (dread) or the AC1M (concert). Solid spuce top with laminate mahogany back and sides. Very good, well balanced tone and has the excellent SRT electronics system and would fall just into your price range.

Edit - Sorry, I was going by AUS$ to US$ conversion, after checking out some AUS websites for pricing, I see they run around a $1000 due to tariff levies.
I'm the only player to be sponsered by 7 guitar companies not to use their products.

No. The Yamaha does seem to be close to the budget.

'Kosmic' have it @ AUD 650. In the UK Yamaha seem to be quite strict with their retailers about prices, so I'd guess that price holds all over Australia. (unless this is ex sales tax?)

They also offer the Fender Sonoran mentioned by Captain Crankey @ AUD 531.

I just went back to double check, I had looked up A3s instead of A1s, it makes more sense now, and here I was starting to feel real bad for the people down under.

I'm not really sure you shouldn't. At the last Musician's Friend 15% off sale, I bought a Sonoran SCE left handed (!) for $323.00 USD.

Britain also has a VAT, Australia and New Zealand, are at the far reaches of the realm...None of this leads to fair pricing in musical instruments or other luxury items. This is also very true of computer hardware.

Plus, here in the "Colonies West", if we need more money, Obama will simply print it for us....(Yeah, yeah, I can feel the hate coming back from that remark already). To this I say, "don't shoot me, I'm only the messenger". Save your energy, I'll probably vote for him again. Having had Rick Santorum as a state senator, I'd say his unique brand of "conservative politics", is very similar to allowing Adolf Hitler to teach your children in a bible studies class.

Swings and roundabouts.

Yamaha A1M is GBP 514 (inc sales tax) / AUD761?

Fender Sonoran SCE is GBP 209-220 (inc sales tax) / AUD 310?

There can be a fair bit of griping in the UK about US prices being cheaper (Apple!), but I don't think it's that bad. Sales tax (VAT) in the UK is 20% of the sale price, and the retail market is smaller, with fewer big players, so less competitive than the USA. If we left the EU (which is a customs union) I suspect we'd see retail prices fall.

My apologies to the TS for being somewhat off topic here.

Capt'n, I have to agree will you 100%. One only needs to follow the money, that of special interest groups, to see where things are headed, as I am sure you know, banks and insurance companies are equal opportunity campaign contributors now.

Of course there is a cost for having the lowest priced consumer goods of any nation, there are a few other EU countries that are following suit, just not on the scale that we are. Heres a small sample of democracy in action, if you haven't seen it, I think you will get a kick out of it. Scroll down to the video of Sen. Sherrod Brown addressing the Senate floor on FTAs back on Oct 21st, it's about 30 min. long but it's worth watching.

Shamefully the senate voted HR 3078 into law about a hour later.
I would love to here your scathing commentary, rebuttal, or views on it. Either PM me or put them on the acoustic chat thread. Thanks.

Definitely consider a Seagull - they're well-crafted, great-sounding instruments, and I believe they represent the best bang-for-buck under $500.
