you could start playing through software, seeing as you don't need to keep up with a band. playing through the computer also allows you to mix easily with whatever tunes your jamming to.

usb interface, software, and some speakers. (assuming you have a computer)

i use garageband and i used to use amplitube. you can get a more generic DAW with VST capabilities and all that should be free.
