So.....I'm a complete newb at this but the noise floor (very quiet but still there) on the clean channel of my Rebel 30 is slowly killing me and Bruce says it's because of the stock tubes and a tube swap will fix it.

So.......it uses 4 12ax7s. Which brand (or w/e parameters there are) should I get.

Obviously, I know nothing about this

The layout of the tubes (if it helps any): http://www.egnateramps.com/download/Rebel30HeadTubeChart.pdf

On some forum a user stated that the V2 tube is only used by the overdrive channel so if I put a higher gain tube in that, it won't affect the clean channel. Correct?

Shameless self-bump because this thread drifted to the second page and no-one reads the second page.

Less than $100 and just the pre-amp tubes.

Then, JJ ECC803 tubes are what you want. They are the long plate low noise variety and aren't quite as dark as their ECC83S.

The regular or the gold pin? And Eurotubes says that it has less gain than the ECC83s but is it a significant drop?

I don't think it's worth going for gold pin myself. The drop in gain is negligible.

chances are you dont need to change all 4 up front. i would only go with 2 decent ones to start. focus on the first v1 position. get that sounding good and the rest is easier. from what i have researched, v4 is all about the headroom as a tube like a 12at7 will help you amp stay clean.

that leaves the 2 in the middle and i would guess v2 is more important than v3. i would assume v3 is strictly for amplification and not really for tone at all.

if you have 100 bucks, make sure the v1 tube has the most thought / money put into it.

Another noob question.

Can I just swap out one pre-amp tube and leave the rest (just to see how it sounds)?

And can I mix different brands of tubes?

EDIT:
ECC803S Gold Pin with Matched Triodes
ECC803S Gold Pin with Balanced Triodes
ECC803S Gold Pin Matched and Balanced

Which one?

Yes. It's the way you should do it. Change one, test. Put it back how it was, try it in the next position. Rinse and repeat. Different tubes will perform better in different positions.

The only time you'd care about matched preamp tubes is in a stereo amp. The only place where a balanced tube is preferable is in the phase inverter.

So are you saying I should go with the one with balanced triodes?

For the phase inverter, yes. No advantage anywhere else.

Those Windsors are so cheap it makes me wonder. The transformers should cost more than that. I should imagine they'd make a great platform for modding though.

I'm debating whether to get that or not. It's practically half the price of a Class 5.......but it's too loud........

But its cheaper than a used one

You could always improve it later. New tubes, new output transformer, etc. I'd be tempted if I was in the market for something like that. It is a Peavey so I should imagine that most of it would be ok as a modding platform. Decent PCB etc.
I've never actually looked inside one though but I'd dearly like to.

But even though it's just $200, i don't think I can justify getting it after getting my Egnater not two months ago. And I've been wanting to swap out the pups on my strat for awhile now.....

What makes it worse is that the sale ends today and then the price is bumped back to 400

Ok, I apologize for the thread hijack but I have a related question, particularly directed to Cath. Just how important is it to use a balanced tube in the phase inverter? I mean, none of my amps have a balanced PI tube anymore, and they all sound fine to me, so maybe I answered my own question, but really, how important is it? I doubt it's as important as Bob from Eurotubes makes it seem to be...
