So I'm sure you all know of IKEA, the store that offers trendy, quality goods at affordable prices. Did you know you could modify the stuff and think outside the box? It's true. It's what http://www.ikeahackers.net is all about.

I thought the site was pretty cool, I got some ideas myself. Any of you guys modified your furniture? Not necessarily IKEA or anything.

I'm thinking of doing this

What's special about the two pictures?

The desk thingy looks like something out of IKEA

Funny that
#4
IKEA need to have tour guides at every store. God-awful layout.
#5
The desk looks cool. I just have to find a proper store that sells ikea furniture...

That desk looks a tad high, but I like the idea.

It's a standing desk, it's supposed to be high. I just started using standing desks and they're pretty awesome.

Well it's made out of different IKEA parts so it's not that strange.

The point is to take things from IKEA and modify them so they work in a different way. Because it's cool and all.

Yeah, I didnt click the links below the pictures before..

After doing so, I see it

The nearest IKEA to me is 250km away so I don't think I'll be doing any of that

No IKEA store near me that I know of though.

That standing desk is pretty nice, although when you put it together, it doesn't seem to be that cost effect against a studio desk with similar features.

I'm seriously considering using standing desks since I'm almost always working on the computer and I'm scared that my back will be screwed before I'm 30. But is it healthier to be standing all the time too? Like 12+ hours?

Also, I wouldn't say IKEA is quality...

...modes and scales are still useless.

Then again knowing Ikea, half the parts will be missing...

EDIT: What would make that desk slightly more awesome would be a slide out extension, so you don't have to sit on a high chair....

No, he's probably posting this from an IKEA, aka his bedroom.

If you're going to be standing that long, I really suggest buying a rubber mat to stand on. My old job was in a factory, so I was standing in one spot for 8 hours a night. Without the mat, it becomes extremely uncomfortable.

Psh, it's 10 minutes away with bus. That's like years in IKEA time.

Nah, but I do have some furniture in my room I'm gonna turn into a desk/cabinet one of these days. Once I get the stupid broken CRT TV and its cabinet out of here...

Make the CRT TV into a fish tank or something. Hack the shit outta that thing.

I'm getting a bar stool for my standing desk so I won't be standing all the time. But it's very nice, you feel more energized and focused. Get a mat or something to stand on, it helps.

Don't know about prices, but generally furniture here are many times cheaper at IKEA. And I think it's great quality, I bought all my stuff cheap and it's very sturdy.

I think the whole "missing parts" thing seem to be entirely exclusive to America, judging by the comments I see anywhere on the internet

This is totally unrelated, but my Finnish-language midterm was in IKEA. Our teachers took us there, hid a bunch of Finnish stuff in random places, gave us Finnish directions, and sent us looking for random objects and answers to a bunch of questions throughout the store. It was the harshest-graded midterm I've ever taken, but I got elderflower juiceboxes at the end, so all good.

OP: This is pretty cool. I usually build my own furniture, but I'm getting some IKEA stuff for next semester. I may have to use this.

cardboard box furniture is where its at. easy to customise(just need scissors) easy to dismantle and discard. cardboard can be picked up for free.

my cardboard desk is ace. four boxes, two on each side with a plank of wood on top. cut the sides off the boxes for shelves. ill post a pic tomorrow.
now extra flamey

I figured this is relevant, and other than not sticking the wood panels in the back of my drawers I haven't modded anything IKEA yet.

Most of the ideas are pretty cool actually, but it would be a lot more cost efficient to build them from scratch, if you are handy and own a few decent power tools.

I have an idea for a standing desk I just thought of. I think I will take two book shelves like this one and simply mount a shelf between them like this one.

It's a pretty cheap idea, might cost me about £40-45 not including some screws. I'll think about it some more, might do it this weekend.
