Don't think this belongs in the MMA thread.

So, martial arts. Does anyone here have any experience practicing or competing in it?

What are your favorite schools/styles?

If you have participated, what is your rank, etc.?

As for me, I practiced Shotokan and Aiki Jujitsu (aikido) for several years. Only reached orange in Shotokan, but advanced to blue belt in Aikido. I'd have to say that Aikido is the funnest art that I've practiced extensively.

I saw two guys in the gym today, one was taught in Tae Kwan Do and the other Muay Thai. They decided to spar a bit, and the Thai guy kept saying, "Why do you stay so far away?" I thought it was funny

td;dr Martial Arts. Discuss.

You know MMA stands for Mixed Martial Arts, right?

Yep. But I was under the impression that that thread was dedicated to the MMA programs, like the televised shit.

If not, the thread will be locked. Doesn't matter either way.

I tell him that everyday yet he claims to be happy with it. Some day he'll crack though and go on a drink and donuts bender for a week.

Aikido was a lot of fun. I'd love to start it up again, once I have a career and money to waste on that sort of thing lol.

Shotokan Karate. I got to brown belt but then i had to stop because of GSCEs. I had been doing it for about 6/7 years. Ive pretty much forgotten how to fight now

But i still randomly fight with my friends for the fun of it o i get the feeling that i could beat a random street-goer in a fight

i still want to take up krava maga. Will when I go to uni. Well.. That or some rugby league

Because for 'karate' you read 'french kissing' and for 'pumpkin', you read 'each other'.

I've been interested in the martial arts since childhood in the 50s. Started out with books by Bruce Tegner ( famous for teaching the Nelson brothers....) and other such items from the libraries.
I've been involved at one time or another with judo, Tae Kwon do, Jeet Kun do, and the Filipino arts.
Even at my advanced age I remain a student, though largely academic at this point. ( I would tend to rely on gun-fu...)

It's a fascinating field with mountains of woo, nonsense, and misinformation floating around.

Tradition ITF Taekwon Do (none of that poser fancy ass flashy shit for me thank you very much) I was red tag but I had to quit after I dislocated my knee

I was trained in a very unorthodox way, by learning useful techniques from many styles. It didn't have a name, nor did any of the techniques really. No belts, no Japanese characters, no katas, no distractions.

You were ready to move on when you were ready, and that was that.

Took Shorin Ryu Karate for a good long while [a precursor to Shotokan, basically, IIRC]. I quit at purple belt though and now it's one of my biggest regrets. Thinking about going back this summer and starting again, though. I really miss it. Not even for fighting, just discipline and there's something... spiritual/soothing in it.

On topic, I did tae kwon do for a while. I enjoyed it, but once we switched instructors, it went to crap and I quit.

I'd really love to give Muay Thai and Judo a try for hard/soft ways, yet I am too poor for any of that. My friends and I will box and wrestle for cardio sometimes though, sparring's always more fun and intense than jogging/swimming.
