does it make that much of a difference?

Probably wouldn't do it if it didn't ey
only pedal i've modded is the Boss Blues Driver. Great pedal before and after the mod, but definitely worth it, very noticeable difference.

Because some men just want to watch the world burn.

But seriously, my Keeley-modded TS9 has some awesome tones in it, and it just seems more 'musical' overall than a stock TS9, at least to my ears. OEM products are made, first and foremost, to turn a profit. Granted, a good many stock OEM products are great out of the box, but even more of them, Tubescreamers included, can be greatly improved by changing just a few small things that the manufacturer did/didn't do to keep build costs lower.
