So I'm upgrading from my Vox valvetronix to a tube amp. Here's the spark notes:

Now the catch is that I am down to get either a head or a combo. A head wont pay immediate dividends but I can run it directly into some monitors for the time being until I get my boy to build me a cab.

So heres a few amps I was looking at

You can't run a head without a speaker-load. Even if the amp you get has a direct-out (xlr or other), you will stiil need to run a cab, else you will destroy the amp.

The Tubemeister won't quite get you to the levels of gain you want. It tops out at 80s heavy metal amounts of gain.

If Dual Channel is really important then I'd go with the HT. If not then the Dark Terror.

Carvin V3M. 50 or 25 Watts. Plenty loud. Good clean, crunch, and distortion in a head the size of a lunch box.

I read that some of Blackstar's amps can be run safely in direct out with as long as you keep the standby switch engaged.

^This. you cant get the combo direct from Carvin for $700 i believe. I'd also suggest the Jet City 50 watt head and a good 1x12 - http://www.zzounds.com/item--JETJCA50H and http://www.zzounds.com/item--JETJCA12S should do it.

Also the price on these Randall seem to have dropped loads - http://www.ebay.com/itm/GREAT-NEW-RANDALL-MODEL-RT503H-50-WATT-3-CHANNEL-TUBE-GUITAR-AMPLIFIER-HEAD-/390404298929?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5ae5e8d8b1

Eppy SG w/Swineheads, Marshall DSL 5c, Joyo Vintage OD, Joyo British Sound, Sounds Sounds Fuzz Face, GGG Guv'nor, Dr. Boogie Pedal, Crybaby in Red Sparkle, Digitech Hardwire Delay

The things I would do for a Les Paul...

The problems occur when you run a signal through it. I would say any amp is safe to turn on when it's on standby - but don't quote me (and certainly don't try it) because I'm not going to get into a pissing match with anyone about this. I cant count how many times I setup my gear, turned on my amp, and fiddled around until I realized my cab was not plugged in. I've never had my amp crap out on me because of that.

Besides, what's the point of having an amp if you cant take it off standby?

Let's not apply regular valve logic to a Blackstar HT-amp. They are full of so much weird shit anyway.

Also, I've played through my Peavey Ultra a couple of times with no cab connected. It survived quite well. '80-'90's Peavey.

Could I perhaps recommend you a Blackstar Combo amp?

Any one in particular? I've seen a few combos that look great but I cant seem to find any metal clips.

It's a shame you're not in the UK - A Laney VH100 will absolutely nail what you want to do.

So my first suggestion is haunt Craigs List and eBay until you find one used - the amps you listed won't come close.

You could look into a Marshall DSL100. With an OD and an EQ pedal, that can get you there.

An Orange Dual Terror might work, but a Terror is no Thunderverb.
