http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2012/03/26/war-on-words-nyc-dept-of-education-wants-50-forbidden-words-removed-from-standardized-tests/

The NYC dept. of education is asking test makers not to use topics that might be offensive. What do you think? Is it a good idea to be sensitive or are they just trying to shield kids from normal facts of life? And what's the deal with birthdays and rock music being considered offensive?
I'm rgrockr and I do not approve of this message.
#2
They said "rock-and-roll music" but not "metal music?"

That aside, this seems inexpressibly dumb.
#3
Lol @ Evolution being on the list. Surely that's a topic for the tests anyway?

I had a friend who was held at gunpoint as a cashier. The robber told him to give him all the money in the register and what not. Apparently my friend then replied, "Would you like a slurpee with that?"
#5
seems ridiculous to me. In the article what Lewis said about the kids having to learn to adjust seems about spot on.
#6
standardized tests are shit anyway

edit: but, yeah... this is ****ing retarded...

birthday? Halloween? seriously? i stopped reading after that.

The word “dinosaur” made the hit list because dinosaurs suggest evolution which creationists might not like, WCBS 880′s Marla Diamond reported. “Halloween” is targeted because it suggests paganism; a “birthday” might not be happy to all because it isn’t celebrated by Jehovah’s Witnesses.

I think I speak for most New Yorkers when I say this is ****ing dumb.

This kind of nonsense is nothing new. One of my all-time favorite books is "The Language Police" by Diane Ravitch. This has been going on for years. Standardized tests can't have the word "cake" because cake is unhealthy, short stories for standardized tests being rejected they're about owls and it would be "regional bias" to include because not all kids live in an area that have owls.

It's really an eye-opening read as to the ridiculous levels of censorship taking place in our school systems. And also why our textbooks are so boring.

How will they do biology tests without the word evolution? Or PSHE without drugs/alcohol? Or theology without religion? Or politics without politics? Or world war 2 without nuclear weapons violence, war and bloodshed, or weapons (why are nuclear weapons and weapons on there twice, surely the latter covers the former. 49 words, methinks)? Or sex education without sex?

And what the **** is up with vermin and cancer being proposed? Reality too much for these kids?

Standardized tests don't cover any of they. They are only math and English, unless it changed since I was in 5th grade.

I find this list offensive. Can they ban that then?

i propose "rock" be added to the list. some kids may have never seen a rock in their life. some kids might smoke rocks. some people think rock is the devil's music. let's be fair to everyone. (and no one at the same time)

Religion has no place in schools. It doesn't matter if the word evolution hurts their feelings, It's fact. America needs to drop the whole protect the Christians thing.
#22
Can't have Halloween, home computers, or magic. No, no, those are offensive.

That list has, like, I don't know, EVERYTHING in the world on it. So pretty much your whole test will be about hot dogs, classical music and math?

I was merely looking at education. Never heard of standardized test (in a specific sense) before.

There was U2 and Blondie
And music still on MTV

O wait, that's 1985.

Master Splinter represents evolution. We can't have that!

EDIT: Also, since they're stealing everything else from 1984, we can't have people expecting what torture treatment they will get.
