I have a very weak uncontrolled and messy upstroke, it really bumms me out.
Anything I can do to make it better?
Thanks

Yes, but you are going to be pissed at my answer.

Practice.

Really, do a down stroke and listen how it sounds, try to replicate it with an upstroke. Take a riff you know and play it starting on an upstroke instead of an downstroke. Do some alternate picking to a metronome and emphasize the upstrokes.

That's really it, you have to practice it. Come up with ways you enjoy doing it with aswell.

Take a guitar lesson and let the instructor analyze your right hand motion. There's several reasons why your upstroke is not functioning well. While yes, more practice will help, you need to practice the motion correctly in order for practicing to be effective.
