I should have been a pair of ragged claws
Scuttling across the floors of silent seas.

-.- i had great dislike for that poem, not even really sure why
"The man that hath no music in himself, nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds, is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils. The motions of his spirit are dull as night, and his affections dark as Erebus. Let no such man be trusted."

Into the distance,
A ribbon of black
Stretched to the point
Of no turning back
Can't keep my mind
From the circling skies,
Tongue-tied and twisted,
Just an earthbound misfit, I

Some maddening draught hath drugged our souls,
In love with vital breath,
Which still the same sad chart unrolls,
Birth, eld, disease, and death.

or possibly,

Beneath the beam that blocked the sky
None had stood so alone as I.
The Hangman noosed me, and no voice there
Cried "Stop!" for me in the empty square.

I'mma fuck a white bitch
I'mma fuck a white bitch
I'mma fuck a white bitch
I'mma fuck a white bitch

and
Suck that dick while I fuck that ass
Suck that dick while I fuck that ass
Suck that dick while I fuck that ass
Suck that dick while I fuck that ass
Suck that dick while I fuck that ass
Suck that dick while I fuck that ass

Really though. By Stephen Crane.
A man said to the universe:
"Sir, I exist!"
"However," replied the universe,
"The fact has not created in me
A sense of obligation."

And then any poem by Walt Whitman. His free verse is what made me fall in love with poetry.

Old age, calm, expanded, broad with the haughty breadth of the universe,
Old age, flowing free with the delicious near-by freedom of death.

from Song of the Open Road.

Robert frost- Nothing Gold Can Stay

I heard this exquisite piece when I was in an incredibly low place and I used it as the basis of reforming the shambles of my life. The line that really cut deep and made me realise my misfortune was this:

"I got that purple drank that texas tea up in my cup
grab a sprite pop the seal pour a duece and then mix it up
"

Life changing.

"Oh love is the crooked thing
There is nobody wise enough
To find out all that is in it
For he would be thinking of love
Until the stars had run away
And the shadows eaten the moon

Oh penny, brown penny, brown penny
One cannot begin it too soon."

Or

Meanwhile, somewhere in the state of Colorado, armed to the teeth with thousands of flowers, two boys entered the front door of their own high school and for almost four hours gave floral tributes to fellow students and members of the staff

That whole poem is eerie

LET us go then, you and I,
When the evening is spread out against the sky
Like a patient etherized upon a table;

or

We have lingered in the chambers of the sea
By sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red and brown
Till human voices wake us, and we drown.

The opening and close to my favorite poem.

Which poem is that? It sounds interesting. I'm not as "up" on these things as I should be.

Life is not a dream. Careful! Careful! Careful!
We fall down the stairs in order to eat the moist earth
or we climb to the knife edge of the snow with the voices of the dead
dahlias.

But forgetfulness does not exist, dreams do not exist;
flesh exists. Kisses tie our mouths
in a thicket of new veins,
and whoever his pain pains will feel that pain forever
and whoever is afraid of death will carry it on his shoulders.

My english class in 11th grade was barren, and the teacher was the 12th grade AP teacher, and for the poetry unit he got the desks really close and had us analyze everything and once we got to the end, I was smitten with Eliot. Best class I've ever been a part of, and it's what got me into writing.

And if I loved you Wednesday,
Well, what is that to you?
I do not love you Thursday—
So much is true.

And why you come complaining
Is more than I can see.
I loved you Wednesday,—yes—but what
Is that to me?

`Be that word our sign of parting, bird or fiend!' I shrieked upstarting -
`Get thee back into the tempest and the Night's Plutonian shore!
Leave no black plume as a token of that lie thy soul hath spoken!
Leave my loneliness unbroken! - quit the bust above my door!
Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!'
Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'

I Wonder How Many People in This City from "The Spice-Box of Earth"

I wonder how many people in this city
live in furnished rooms.
Late at night when i look out at the buildings
I swear I see a face in every window
looking back at me
and when I turn away
I wonder how many go back to their desks
and write this down.

Oh right, sorry. "I, too, sing America" got me thinking of Walt, and with his name in that one, I made the conclusion.

I always loved the Hughes retort far more.
