So I tried the Monte Cristo a couple of days ago. It was good, but man let me tell you that stuff was rich I can probrably only eat that once or twice a month

Traditionally, the sandwich is dipped in its entirety in egg batter and fried. In some regions of the United States it is served grilled, and in some regions it is served as an open sandwich with only the bread battered. It can also be served as an open sandwich using french toast as a base, with ham, turkey and Swiss cheese piled and then heated slightly under a broiler. The sandwich is sometimes served with fresh fruit or with clotted cream or sour cream on the side, less often with fruit preserves, powdered sugar, maple syrup, or sweet or spicy mustard sauce instead. Monte Cristos may, more recently and infrequently, be served with a dusting of powdered sugar. In most regions, the sandwich is savory rather than sweet. It can be served with Thousand Island dressing; this particular variation is often referred to as "Cumberland Head style.

So have you ever tried the Monte Cristo? Did you like it? Was it rich?

EDIT: I forgot to add the last poll option as follows: I prefer Reubens

Yep. That's a good sandwich. And I'm not too big on ham.

I don't mix my sweet food with my savory food. It's like someone who dips their French fries in their McFlurry. Yuck.

A restaurant in my hometown fries them in pancake batter, plus they'll use any meat you want.

That's good eatin'.

Then you don't know how to eat food.

Evidence: You're using a McFlurry in your hypothetical.

Check out The Chip Shop if you're ever in Brooklyn.

The English are just as fucked up as we are, if not more so.

edit: I realize that's not in England, but the guy who runs the place is so British he shits the queen.

I got mine from Cheddars.

Why are people saying my poll is like KJB's? I'm not trying to mirror his style in any way. His polls have no punctuation and more choices that are usually lengthy.

That's where I got mine! The one in Columbus, Georgia.

I just convinced my wife to go to a very nice (and expensive) restaurant in downtown Tacoma for lunch, because they have a Monte Cristo. Might get it now...

Yeah looks nice, but there is far to much filler in that. IMO a sandwich needs to be no thicker than 2.5 cm.

Take off that powdered sugar and jam and I'm sure its nice.

I've only had one. it was okay, but not the best.
however, the one in that picture looks much better than the one I had. so it was probably just where I had mine.

Yea, the prices at Cheddars are very reasonable. You get a good amount of food for a low price.

This thread inspired me. I just had the best monte cristo ever. There's an amazing restaurant in Tacoma called Over the Moon Café, its actually my favorite restaurant, and I had their Monte cristo for lunch just now. AMAZING. Sauteed, not fried, but it was even better. Gruyere cheese, prosciutto instead of ham, can't remember what else.
My God, it's full of stars!

Lol yeah, it's what you get when a doughnut has a menage a troix with a turkey sandwich and a ham sandwich. Very delicious, very filling, and very unhealthy.
