Simple question: some countries have taxpayer-funded healthcare (Canada, for example) while other countries have taxpayer-funded post-secondary education (Finland, Sweden, Norway, etc). Which would you rather have and which do you think is most viable and valuable economically?

Better education would lead to better health in the long run.

Education.

Both great but I would have to say healthcare. I think keeping people alive and well is more important than education, but education is definitely number 2 out of everything ever.

Healthcare. The cost of education is probably less long term.

Health care. As someone with health issues and no insurance the bills are outlandish.

Can you elaborate?

Obama pays for my uni, sooo I guess healthcare it is. If not though, I'd go for education since most jobs provide healthcare anyways, amirite?

Seriously. Education, if you take out loans, means a monthly payment for a while. Healthcare is a monthly payment for LIFE!

Between Doctor visits (specialists) and prescriptions I put out about $1,000 a month.

Anyone who's listing education is probably young enough that they've never had to pay for insurance or pay for their own costly procedure or test. I don't think many people can fathom how quickly privatized health care can financially destroy you until they get their first hospital bill.

Education. From a country in which we have both though, i have to say that government funded education can produce schools of reasonable quality, while with healthcare, its pretty crap and if you want even mediocre healthcare, you have to go to the private sector.

This raises an interesting point though. With free education, the curricula would be a lot tougher to come up with to please those attending. Private universities and tuition kind of do ensure that a certain level of educational quality is attained and are able to produce that sort of niche program for things that not everyone can or would take. I wonder how many people voting for free education would be on board with the sort of curriculum a publically or government funded school might produce.

Define education. Tertiary and above is not worth it, primary and (arguably) secondary education should be gov't funded. Btw, I choose option c, where I live in Australia and get both.

But the thing is terminal illnesses don't care if your illiterate or an educated person.

I think healthcare. If my country didn't have tax funded healthcare, I'd probably be dead.

The other thing is that universal healthcare doesn't automatically guarantee a healthier population.

I'm not advocating against free healthcare by any means. I just think a more educated public, apart from being healthier on average, would also be better off in other areas of life that don't necessarily revolve around only health.

EDIT: also, a better educated public would make the push for universal healthcare in the future. just sayin'
