http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/04/11/11144072-congressman-says-80-fellow-lawmakers-are-communists#comments

Freshman Rep. Allen West (R-FL) claimed at a town hall meeting that about 80 members of Congress are communists, a remark which has drawn quick fire from opponents.

"I believe there's about 78 to 81 members of the democratic party that are members of the communist party," West told supporters at a town hall meeting in Jensen Beach, FL. He was responding to a question by a participant who asked, "what percentage of the American legislature do you think are card carrying Marxists?"

Rep. Allen West, R-Fla., claimed at a town hall meeting that about 80 members of Congress are communists, a remark which has drawn quick fire from opponents.
Asked to respond to the comments, West spokeswoman Angela Marvin told NBC News that the Congressman was referring to the 76 members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

"The Congressman was referring to the 76 members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus," Marvin said in a written statement. "The Communist Party has publicly referred to the Progressive Caucus as its allies."

"The Progressive Caucus speaks for itself," Marvin continued, "These individuals certainly aren't proponents of free markets or individual economic freedom."

West's office also referred to a post on the website for the Communist Party USA where it says they made a mistake by turning "away from our allies in Congress, the Progressive Caucus, and John Conyers" during their fight for a single-payer system being included in Obama's health care law.

Libro DellaPiana, who is one of the vice chairs of the Communist Party USA, called West's statements "ridiculous" and "a cheap shot."

"There are no members of Congress in the Communist party," DellaPiana said, "We support public parks and I assume Congressmen West does too, that doesn't mean he's a Communist."

Allen West has been thrust into the spotlight after a number of notable Republicans listed him as a possible running-mate for Mitt Romney in the general election. Of those who have called for West to be considered is Sarah Palin, Senator Lindsay Graham (R-SC), and Herman Cain.

This isn't the first time West has criticized a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. In January of last year, West criticized Progressive Caucus Co-Chair Rep Keith Ellison (D-MN) as "someone that really does represent the antithesis of the principles upon which this country was established" because he is a practicing Muslim.

There are communists sitting in congress right now! What are you going to do about the red menace?

OP, you say that like it's a bad thing.

McCarthy went Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overboard, but it's interesting that subsequent events showed that his suspicions were largely correct.

His methods however, were shameful.

Here's the thing though, even if everyone McCarthy dug up, or got fired (the number who lost their jobs is somewhere around 12,000 I believe), was a communist...communism isn't a crime. It still isn't. So either this is just a bunch of empty political BS, or the old man's off his nut, thinking there's spies everywhere.

As cold as it sounds, I think things will get better in America once the Red Scare generation is gone. Then maybe we can institute a few social programs without having a whole generation that's been brainwashed into thinking that anything remotely socialized = Stalinism going and voting them into the ground.

As I said, a lot of information has come to light, both from here and the former Soviet Union, that shows he was more right than he was given credit for.

Not that the spying that took place seems to have changed much, but that's not really the point, is it?

no, they weren't, not even a little bit. he was right about like, Alger Hiss and no one else, and i mean, if you accuse hundreds and hundreds of people of being Communists, it really raises the odds of getting one right.

Look up the Venona files and the report of the Moynihan Commission on Government Secrecy as a start.

That was my impression. And, sort of fixed, since even though McCarthy was going after communists at large, it was under the pretense of finding spies and traitors. I'm sure he found at least a few communists who had no connection to the Soviet Union at all and locked them up anyway.

EDIT: And to the point about VENONA and Moynihan: Only Halperin was found guilty after McCarthy started his campaign. Everyone else's convictions came before his Wheeling, VA speech, so you can't really credit McCarthy's witch-hunt with anyone's conviction but Halperin's: that means Hiss and the Rosenburgs.

Moynihan doesn't really say anything other than that "government secrecy is a form of regulation," and that it negatively affects national politics.

Funny...

The Rosenbergs, Hiss, White, Currie, Halperin and over 300 others were found in the Venona intercepts.

His communist witch hunt was, as I said earlier, shameful. But he was right on the spies...

Again though, only Halperin (and maybe Currie) were found and tried after the Red Scare began. You can't credit McCarthyism with the Rosenburgs, or Hiss, or White, really, since their convictions all came before the 1952 Wheeling, VA speech. VENONA is legitimate counter-espionage, McCarthyism is witch-hunting.
