So, It's that time of year boys and girls of the UK.
The best opportunity to luck out on a horse race this calendar year.

THE GRAND NATIONAL!

4:15 off at Aintree.

http://sports.williamhill.com/bet/en-gb/betting/e/2884167/gn/4%3a15.html
There's the general odds, a little better than Ladbrokes as usual.

Got my horses picked, who else id betting and what on?

For anyone interested I've got;

  • Arbor Supreme 100/1 - £5 on the nose
  • Deep Purple 66/1 - £1 each way
  • Weird Al 50/1 - £1 each way
  • Black Apalachi 40/1 - £1 each way
  • Ballabriggs 14/1 - £1 each way

Bear in mind I have no idea about horse racing beyond age and handicap.

Edit: I changed my bets to all on the nose, to cover my bets if any do come in.

I stuck a punt on West End Rocker and Arbor Supreme. This means these horses will both fall.

Sorry if anyone else has money on them.

I have:

Killyglen £1 each way
Chicago Grey £1 each way
Seabass £2 to win

Used the last of my Skybet deposits. Probably none of them will even finish.

S'alright man, my best bet is probably Ballabriggs and that'll definitely fall two fences from the end since my dad has his money on it.

Arbor supreme will probably fall at The Chair as well since my horses always fall there for some reason.

I have a good record(between 1/3 an 1/2 of the horses I've backed) falling at Bechers Brook.
Thiugh since that's been 'improved' this year, maybe they'll take a tumble elsewhere.

I picked "Mon Mome" out of a hat for sweepstakes at work.
I also put a fiver on SeaBass and Shakalakaboomboom.
On playing the Paul Gilbert signature at the guitar store extensively, my missus sighed:
"Put it down now, It's like you love that guitar more than me!"
In Which I replied.
"Well it has got two F-Holes!"

The hell is "on the nose" and "each way" ?

To finish with it's nose still intact and to run some of the race in reverse?
#12
Tharawaat. Ended up getting the horse with the worst odds in the syndicate being run were I work, apparently with odds of 200-1!

On the nose means to win.
Each way means it can come either 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th and you still get a payout, but the odds are quartered then divided by whatever position it comes (I think, I'll check that)

So if you put £1 on the nose at 100/1 and it wins you get £100.
But if you put the same bet each way and it came first you only get £25 but could have got £12.50 if it came second and so on.

That explains it but with dodgier numbers. Looks like I was wrong, I've never been good with betting maths

Im not a big animal rights dude, but i it is a pretty cruel event with the amount of animals that get shot.

Whats next, a sweepstake on foxhunting?

Please, the money is on cockfights. Fox hunting is too difficult to trace the winning dog.

I've got a pound on 5 different horses to win. Ranging between 14/1 & 25/1. I reckon I'm in with a shot!

I can't stand the Grand National. It's barbaric and should be banned; you're watching people race horses to death ffs.

Don't know exactly. They did some parade when they were going through all the runners and as they ran somewhere after that... (to the start? ) he got chucked off

Yeh, mines gone

Something like 20 horses have died in this race since 2000. Didn't realise it was so bad.

Yeah it's worse at the start. Later falls aren't as bad as spaces appear. The early ones with everyone still in is where people really get hurt.

I think last year two horses died of exhaustion/ overheating.

ffs well I didn't win....
I had the three leading the line the entire course, and then they lose it at last minute. **** gambling

I had money on Seabass and Shakalakaboomboom. They were both right in it until the last fence

I've always thought a lot of the falls are more due to there being too many horses in the field, than they are to the fences(though they play a role as well).

Well, it's a mix really. More horses = more messy but a lot of the falls come from not jumping properly at the fence.

How shakalakaboom didn't win that idk.

Wonder how many died this time, then

You usually see them hosing the horses off to cool them down. Keep watching and you'll hear. Usually the fall doesn't kill them.

I had Shakalakaboom, Seabass & Cappa Bleu. They were the front three the entire time and then couldn't win it. ffs.

I swear I had Seabass at something like 20/1

Not unless you put it on each way.

IIRC, I think there's at least one dead this year.
