Can't wrong with with Art Blakey and any of miles' quintets. As far as playing, some things to do are learn to comp, swing, and know chord extensions.
if you hear something you like, transcribe it. it'll take a long time at first. but, like anything else, the more you do it the better you'll be. don't overthink it. just break the solos/melodies up into phrases. sing it. it's music. if you can really sing it, you can play it.

play it until it DOES sound like them.
Get hold of some Charlie Christian material - there is a great tab book by Stan Ayeroff. Also spend some time listening to the great saxophonist Charlie Parker and get some guitar transcriptions of some of his stuff
