I'm looking for a guitar DVD to learn from. I'm at an intermediate-advanced area in my playing and am looking for a video that can teach me a good mix of 80s metal, jazz, rock, arpeggios, sweeps, melodic playing and and modal playing. If you have any recommendations on the best ones that have worked for you, or that you know of, please inform me! Thanks in advance!!

Frank Gambale has some DVDs. One is about modes (cant remember if it's any good or not) and the other is Chopbuilder, which is a formidable technique workout which is worthwhile if you stick at it. He also practically invented sweep picking as a shred technique. Beware of dodgy 80s fashion and terrible wigs though.

I would also heartily recommend any and all videos made by Paul Gilbert, the king of 80s shred and a great teacher. I learned a lot from his videos and columns in a magazine a few years ago.

Individually I go for appearance, and music, over the recognized standard of what creates 'good technique'. To quotation Jim Reid, "You should be doing a gig the day you get your first instrument."

I'm really just talking about the skill because if you really paid attention, you would see that his playing is well... you would have to either buy these dvds, or sell your soul to the devil

To be fair he seems like a nice enough guy, and he is a very clean player, but the Slayer solo in that example was mindless shit to my ears. I guess it is sorta impressive to be able to play those licks, but I wouldn't want to.
Also he kept referring to gallops as 'triplets' in his metal rhythm DVD, which is pretty poor.

Lick Library has lots of videos for everyone. You can get on their plan for about 20+ a month and get 12 DVD's a year plus access to the site.

Of course if you go to the library they got tons of stuff also.
