Hey guys, I know you know G&L, so I need some help. First of all, what is the average price range of an ASAT and of a Legacy?

Next, I know I like a C-shaped neck, gibson SG '50s style. Which G&L option would be closest to that? I was thinking the G&L Wide C

Last, what are your opinions on ASATs and Legacies? If I'm looking for Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, Rock n' Roll tones which would suit me better? Basically which is more versatile? Can I get Legacy tone out of an ASAT and vice versa?

1. pricing will vary based on the options you choose. Two places I recommend calling for exact pricing based on your specs would be doc woods or eddies guitars. At docs, pretty much anyone is good to talk to, at eddies talk to brett. (not that the other guys won't help, I've just dealt with Brett before and he's a great guy).
http://www.drwoodsguitars.com/electric/
http://eddiesguitars.com/electric-guitars.html/
If you look used the prices drop quite a bit, but then you lose the ability to select specific options unless you get lucky and find one with the neck you want, and are flexible on finishes etc.

2. I think you are correct. I went with the #3 (wide c) neck which is closest to my Gibson lp. it's very comfortable for me but it's not as fat as a 50s neck. It has the shape though without the "big shoulders" feel like some 50s neck profiles are prone to have.

3. Both models are very versatile. I was going for pretty much the same stuff you are and I settled on an asat bluesboy semi-hollow. While Hendrix was known for playing strats, he recorded with humbucker guitars frequently. Page recorded almost exclusively with the dragon Tele for most of the first 4 releases. That said, a nice legacy is something I'm gassing for anyway. But there isn't much that the bluesboy cant do spot on, except maybe srv clean tones. The neck bucker does a great job of it in its own right.

If you get me a list of the options you want, I can get you a quote through my contact at G&L. He took good care of my on my asat and usually gets back to me in a couple days.
I wondered why the frisbee was getting bigger, then it hit me.

Ah, thank you. I think a bluesboy semi-hollow would be great. It's going to either be this or an Eastwood Airline 3p deluxe. Anyway here's my specs:

*G&L wide ''C''
*Med-Jumbo frets
Flatsawn Hard Rock Maple
*Clear Satin neck finish
Graph-tech nut
White neck binding
Single-bound white body binding
3-ply *white pickguard
Black pickup cover
*Tobacco sunburst finish

EDIT: oh shit I just realized that it's the tribute that's in my price range for the bluesboy classic semi-hollow. I can't find the options for the tribute guitars, if there are any. If most of these options are available for the tribute series, then that will work. I'll star the options that it would need to have. Thanks again.

Here are the specs on the tribute semi hollow blues boy.

Specifications
CONSTRUCTION: bolt-on
SCALE: 25 1/2"
PICKUPS: Paul Gagon-designed AS4255C alnico neck humbucker, Leo Fender†-designed G&L MFD™ single coil bridge pickup made in Fullerton, California
BODY WOOD: semi-hollow Swamp Ash with twin voice chambers and f-hole
NECK WOOD: Hard-Rock Maple with Maple or Rosewood fingerboard
NECK WIDTH AT NUT: 1 5/8"NECK
RADIUS: 9"
NECK PROFILE: medium C
FRETS: 22 medium jumbo, nicke
lTUNING KEYS: 18:1 ratio, sealed-back
BRIDGE: traditional boxed-steel bridge with individual brass saddles
CONTROLS: 3-position pickup selector, volume, tone

For me one of the big things was wanting a flatter radius, but I probably could have gotten along with a 9, I preferred the 12.

nope.

how they come is how they come.

i sent a message to the guy that hooked me up with my bluesboy. when i hear back from him i'll let you know. i hadn't messaged him in a while so i just sent him a "hey do you want to get a quote on another guitar?" type of message. i didn't send him the full specs. i figured it's better to ask him about it first.

but you can send your specs to the two guys i linked above and see what they say about a USA custom order.

Edit, just heard from my guy, he's not with G&L anymore.

Try the S-500 if you can too, the pickups have a nice beefy tone, but they still have that single coil sound

Went up to October Guitars in Wausau and played a few Comanches today while I was up there for other reasons. I definitely feel the difference in the 9" to 12" radius with the rosewoods. Flatter seems to be better with G&L to me.

Ippon we need a pic showing that top.
Looks like its complete win either way.
Edit: oops I think it's black and the smudges on my iPad screen made it look quilty.

For me it was just preference. I think my prs is somewhere inbetween and I get along with it just fine. I like the feel of my lp best so thats what I went for.

AFAIK the Comanche has Z-Coil humbucking pickups. The shape of the pickups give more bass response for the EAD strings and more bite to the GBe strings. It has the mini switch which allows for more pickups combinations. I think the Comanche has a wider range of tones in comparison to the Legacy, but I'm not too sure if it has the traditional strat tone. Someone who owns one will have to help you there

I have a G&L SC-3 Series 2 owned from new since 1989 - black with Leo's signature in gold. I've blocked off the trem with a bit of wood and taken the springs out though, 'cos I don't like them. I'll post pictures as soon as I take some and figure out how to load them up.

Student guitars my arse!

She has 3 single-coil MFD pickups which are "supposed" to be similar to P90's (I'm going no further than that), but given the SC-3 is all solid maple, it seems to be a good match as the darker pups tame the brightness of the maple body, although I do need to play with the tone control depending on the amp.

All I know is that I've recorded a '63 Strat (not mine!) and my SC-3 (which is now over twenty years old) and compared both back-to-back, and they are tonally very similar to my ears, which is pretty nice. Well done Leo!

Sad. A matching headstock Daphne Blue strat has always been a huge GAS of mine. I'm definitely sold on the Legacies and Comanches. Looks like I'll be sending G&L and email.

What happened to the Tribute G&L S-500? Musician's Friend doesn't carry it anymore?

Also, what do you guys think of the Tribute Series Comanche? How is the quality compared to the non-tribute one?
#64
the tribute series in general is of a very high quality for what you pay for them.
I wondered why the frisbee was getting bigger, then it hit me.

I've played many Tribute series I would put on part with MIJ Fenders. The Comanches are especially awesome.

Also, kytokinesis, I went to my local G&L place (October Guitars in Wausau Wisconsin) and played my first Comanche. I'm completely sold on the MFD Z-coils. I'd take one over a Legacy. As many folks here know, I'm a total Strat slut, so I'm pretty picky about them. Rarely do they really, really impress me, and that USA Comanche did.

I think I'm going to pick up a Tribute Comanche as a backup to my ASAT Special Deluxe. Then I'll use that extra cash I was gonna use on the USA model to buy a motorcylce

Nevermind, bought an expensive camera instead. The classic will have to wait. Although, I did take the opportunity to use that camera to snap new photos of my Tribute:

I'm kind of wanting a Comanche myself, but I have a lot of pre-comitted fun funds to go through first, like paying for the custom I'm having built.

And while I'm not a fan of Teles in general, I have to say this: if I win the lottery anytime soon, I'm buying this G&L Johnny Garcia prototype ASAT.

That's the one I bought. Apparently that color of white is hard to find on the tributes. I'm pretty stoked. Don't worry, I'll take more/better pictures of it once it arrives. This would be my 3rd tribute if I didn't buy the camera that snapped the photos of my other ASAT above.

that's sweet. would look better with a black guard imo but very nice specs.

there's a used asat tribute in my local shop for $350 but the neck is twisted. swamp ash body with the see through orange finish. looks awesome. bummer about the neck though.

I haven't decided what pickguard I'll throw on it, yet. I might just stick with the Tortoise. I'm excited to see how that Gagon pickup sounds. I have a secret evil plan to swap that humbucker for a Burstbucker.

that walnut asat tribute on the bay with $285 bid is tempting.
