So! After the trilogy of Video Game Cover Albums that I started, it's time for a new series:

The UG Community 8 bit Style Music Album!

The idea is simple enough, make songs that sound like 8-bit era video game music. Examples would be, for instance, Cave Story, this Adventure Time fan video , or even things like this dubstep song.

Da Rules:

1. You can only submit things that you have personally recorded and arranged.

2. The submission should be over 1:30 minutes in length

3. The submission needs to be in a decent mp3 format

4. Collaborations with other users are of course allowed, and are welcomed. Just make sure that both users' names appear on the submission

5. You may only submit songs that you yourself have written, that means no 8 bit covers of existing songs!

6. Songs must have an element of 8-bit sound to it. That doesn't mean that the entire song has to be in the style of 8-bit, but a good portion has to. Take the dubstep song from earlier as an example, you need to at least have that much "8-bit" sound in it for it to count.

7. Deadline is the 1st of October - NO EXTENSIONS this time, no exceptions!

For those of you with absolutely ZERO equipment, here's what you can do:

1. ask us UGers who have spent way too much money on recording crap and software to help you

There are tons of programs out there to write MIDI files. They may sound like crap, but the great thing about MIDI files is that you can export and import them into nearly any software. This means that you can compose something with a program that sounds like crap and send it to someone with better software, who just runs it through it and voila! instant awesomeness.

2. Cheap recording for beginners

To being recording, all you need is an audio interface. These range in price from 30$ to 1500$. To record for this simple project, you can get an interface like a UX1 from Line6, which comes with a great program called Podfarm. For further information, please refer to this thread from the recording forum , which will get help get you started with any questions you might have. Don't worry about sounding like the latest Bob Rock record, none of us know that much about recording, and we can still make stuff that other people enjoy.

3. Collaborate with another UGer

If you collaborate on a song with a UGer who has better equipment than you, you can also get good results without spending any money or having the equipment yourself. I recommend going with the other two options, though, as this is pretty much the option for lazy people.

4. Free VSTs:

The Peach , Toad and Triforce plugins from Tweakbench are excellent 8-bit style plugins, I can highly recommend them, and they're for free!

So, Excelsior! Let's get this ball rolling, maggots!

Don't forget to all personal sticky this thread!

I'll have to pass on this one, I'm too busy with other music projects, with my full length still in the works that I want to get out before UGPR4 comes out, a song for the stoner/doom/sludge album, a split with another UGer...

I remember someone else tried an 8-bit album a long time ago, and it failed miserably.

I also know of a program that takes MIDI files and turns them into 8-bit sounding MP3s. I'm trying to remember the name. It was something like GCSX or something, if anyone knows that i'm talking about.

Oh, and sign me up.

EDIT: Found a download site for the program. http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-SanJose/8700/P/GsorigE.htm

It's old, but it still works fine.

Is there a deadline for signing up? What if you sign up but don't produce anything?
I'm considering giving this a go, but I'm afraid of commitment and should probably be doing other things.

I'm in. Do they have to be original tunes or can they be 8-bit arrangements? I have a few transcriptions of songs (most I did) that I would love to make 8-bit.

If you sign up but don't deliver you'll spend a weekend with the pain monster.

That's not gay, it's called copyright

What if they're public domain tunes? I was thinking Ravel's Mother Goose suite, which has been public domain for the past 4 years.

It's not about copyright, it's about having a collection of original 8-bit style songs. There are enough covers out there, this album is aiming to be full of original UG material.

I've got a ton of songs written using MIDI that I could 8-bit up with the right software. Any particular genre? Cause most of mine are written as metal tunes.

Nope, they can be whatever genre, as long as they're in the 8-bit style.

Alright I'm in. I'm gonna need someone to run my MIDI files through an 8-bit VST, though. Not liking the sound of the one posted on the bottom of the last page

Did you check out the ones in the OP? Peach, Toad and Triforce are extremely excellent 8-bit VSTs.

Fair enough, I'll look through my own ideas and see if any of them would work as an 8-bit. If I had to pick now, it would be a latin-y tune. Shit's gonna be fun.
