I'm gonna have to say maybe to this. Disregard that, I'm in.

The concept's interesting, and I've been meaning to do some more chiptune for a while. But I can't say if I'll be able to come up with an idea.

Also, this site's a great resource for trackers (the hardcore way of doing chiptune) and VST plugins: http://woolyss.com/chipmusic.php

You should probably edit it into the OP, because a lot of the plugins on there are incredible. And better than Peach, Toad, and Triforce, IMHO. Well, they have Peach, Toad, and Triforce, too.

EDIT: Wait, two months to crank out an idea? Fuck it, I can do this. Make that a yes.

This is what I've got done so far. This is just my first take at this whole kind of thing

Through the Waterfall

Everything is done using the Peach VST. Except the drums... which are just stock electro drums in Cubase. Cause I didn't like Toad

I actually have an 8-bit synth that was handmade by this dude in Chicago that I might employ. It sorta has a SID chip (Commodore 64) vibe, since it has filters and stuff, and has a few waveforms that remind me of it. Although they're analog filters. And I can't remember if the SID has analog filters or not.

I cant contribute, due to my lack of a MIDI and guitar interface etc, but musicradar has recently done an 8-bit article, with many of them free, and others not so free. Cool stuff, if you need any of it.

So is there any particular style to this album or is anything in 8bit cool? I've always wanted to write an old school NES style track.

Anything 8-bit-ish is cool. It doesn't have to STRICTLY be 8-bit - you can use "real" drums or something like that, for instance.

I made a really rough draft of the beginning of mine, all instruments in one take so a few mistakes here and there, but there's the gist of it. Not 8-bitified quite yet.

Compositionally I've got mine finished already... but I'm gonna spend the rest of the two months mixing and making sure everything sounds how I want it to (this is the first time I've ever done anything like this ).

Also best site for chiptune samples and vsti's I've ever found.

Already posted it, brah, but yes, I agree.

It also has a great selection of trackers, which most serious chiptune producers tend to use in lieu of a DAW. Some have built-in sound generation (or are sample-based but have tools to make your own samples with various waveforms or letting you draw the waveform itself, like MilkyTracker), while others can use VSTs and VSTis. They're all fair game, and they just seem to lend themselves nicely to chiptune, although they're a bit harder to use than a sequencer in a DAW. But you can do some really cool things with them that are harder with a regular sequencer.

Also, I have an idea of what I want to write, but I haven't even sketched it out yet. It's going to be a little more traditional in terms of structure than most of the other electronic music I've done (which isn't much; I'm not prolific at all, even though I've been making it for like two and a half years), with a more pop-influenced structure and more chord changes than normal (hopefully with some tonicization going on; I'm hoping for something relatively sophisticated in a harmonic sense, but not as sophisticated as jazz or classical). It's not really going to be pop (I'm really aiming more for rock), just very melodic and with a more verse/chorus-style structure, although I'm hoping to have a pre-chorus and a bridge, maybe even an interlude or middle eight, so it won't just be a basic verse-chorus structure. But I want to work in that sort of idiom for this, as I want a really energetic and catchy track that recalls the best of Capcom's and Konami's classic music with a bit more going on musically.

I'd sign up but I really don't know if I'll have a computer by the time the deadline is up.
I could put some things onto my dads laptop but I really doubt it has the specs to do anything without severe lag and hangups and shit.

I really liked this

had like a prog rock feel to it after the beginning. I could easily see it being turned in to guitar riffs.

I'm very tempted by this. I have no idea what to do though.

Edit: Deadline is my birthday and that's ages away. I'll get my MIDI controller back in a few weeks.

Also, you say it has to be completely original, but are we allowed to use samples? I downloaded a free sample pack and it's got some famous samples in like the coin noise from mario and stuff like that. I would only use them every now and again, the melodies and chords, etc are original.

I like it.

I want in. I've got a rough version of the song I want to do - I mean, the music is all written, I wrote it for the RPG Soundtrack collab in the Tabs and Chords forum, but I want to mess around with the VSTs a little.

Just to help with inspiration.. Daft Punk used loads of 8bit sounds in Tron.

If anyone is using Kontakt and doesn't know about the 'Lo-Fi' effect in inserts, you can turn all of your synths down to 8 bit.

Have a look for brickwallaudio syklix while you're there- I had a search but I can't seem to get hold of it now- it's a load of free kontakt synths inspired by Tron and Blade Runner.

I've combined those two things so far in my entry, with some less 8bit stuff too.

I'll have to pass on this one, I'm too busy with other music projects, with my full length still in the works that I want to get out before UGPR4 comes out, a song for the stoner/doom/sludge album, a split with another UGer...
