I've been seeing a lot of stuff about some YES campaign for Scottish Independence in 2014. As an American, I'm not really aware of the political situation of the UK, but I don't really understand what the point of Scottish independence would be. Is it just a bunch of tryhard nationalism, or is there something deeper to it?

Scotland has oil, they want to keep the oil for themselves while retaining the benefits that being part of the UK gave them.

Edit: the poll options make it look like you think being from Europe automatically means knowing about the situation. Why should someone in mainland Europe care about Scotland?

Probably for the same reasons that everyone in Europe seems to care so much about America.

If Scotland was independent they'd lose so much money and quality of life.

They've already got free Uni, free prescriptions and stuff up there. all that would be lost if they left. and they'd have to start their own Armed forces and stuff, so they'd overall end up a very poor country, despite the oil.

Yeah but America is... America. What happens there actually influences the world. Nobody really cares about Scotland. You don't honestly think someone from Turkey or Poland is going to care about Scotland do you?

For the same reasons that someone in Massachusetts cares about what happens in Arizona.

I wouldn't go for indemapendance unless we could dynamite ourselves off of England and go someplace warmer.

Oh, we're fucking sorry for basing our Empire on a tiny cold island. We could have given you the Welsh land, would you rather be Welsh? Didn't think so. Quit whining.

For the same reasons that someone in Massachusetts cares about what happens in Arizona.

So imagine Arizona is united with some other state around there, I don't know much about American geography but I'm pretty sure Texas is next to it. Imagine Arizona is in a union with Texas, and they're both part of the USA, and then one day Arizona decides to leave and becomes its own state. It's still part of the USA, so why should the average person living in Massachusetts care?

You guys will run out of money so fast Good luck setting up a new infrastructure and army. All you want is the UK to help you but not tax you. Even if the oil remains you're still poorer and if it goes you are gonna get raped.

It would have maybe worked 30-40 years ago, but since then BP has taken most of the oil. Scotland could have teamed up with Norway and Pharoe Islands and becomes a SUPERUNION.

They could have called themselves MegaScotland...or UltraScotland.

But on a serious note, I don't see any hard evidence for why it should happen. I've never actually heard Alex Salmon mention anything that has made any sense. What currency would be used? Why would Scotland be better off? Surely there are complications to it and I don't hear you mentioning them. Watch Scotland use the euro and beg for a bailout within 6 months.

Because it affects the country as a whole.

Is it going to affect your average Joe in Massachusetts? Especially if Massachusetts in this analogy is Greece or Spain, where people are more worried about their houses being repossessed than Scotland leaving the UK.

Do you know how hard it is to spell Massachusetts if you've never been there or had anything to do with it? Why couldn't you have picked Vermont or something?

I thought they were their own country....

they are, but they're also part of the UK (a sovereign state, which basically means we're all under the power of the same centralized gov).

You could use a currency linked to the British Pound like Ireland did.

I forgot that having your own problems to deal with means you can't care about others' problems as well. My bad.

All I'm saying is that the Greek media probably isn't reporting Scotland very much, when there are riots on a fairly regular basis and the country's economy is in an incredibly fragile state. People living in Greece probably won't have had much chance to hear about Scotland.

I am. But if a greek person was browsing the Pit and happened on this thread and didn't know that Scotland was planning to leave and didn't care either, the poor fellow wouldn't have a poll option.
