Someone is attempting to skydive 23 miles above the surface of the earth. Thoughts?
Personally, I think it'd be fun as hell, but I'd forget to open the parachute and hit the ground

Not going to happen. By the time he deploys the parachute he will be falling as fast as any other skydiver would. Terminal velocity and such.

Edit: Assuming he deploys the parachute at the same distance from the ground as a normal skydiver would.

Its possible for sure just extremely dangerous, they have been doing this for a very long time Joseph Kittinger was the first and currently holds the record at 19 miles.

Problem with going higher is re-entry into the atmosphere, your suit would have to be made of some pretty strong material because you are going to hit around 200 degrees Celsius or so just because of the air friction and orbital velocity. Also coming back into the thick atmosphere from the stratosphere you run back into gravity which could actually slow you down enough to inflict negative G's which will cause all the blood to rush to your head, first causing your vision to go red, then possibly bursting blood vessels before you finally black out. Then of course you need one hell of a parachute because you will be at terminal velocity when you pull it, a normal chute would probably rip right off your body possibly taking arms or legs with it.

He's got a pressure suit on to protect him from the lack of pressure up there and from the cold. Also, he's obviously got a steady air supply, or else he'd just pass out considering there's almost no O2 up there.

Also, it's not like he's re-entering the atmosphere like astronauts do. He's just going very high up. I remember reading about this a while back and it said that even though he's super high up there he still has like 3 atmospheric layers until he would hit space. I don't think the balloons can go that high though.
#22
Not sure how much higher that is than the other jump, crappy article. I think kittenger did 105k ft, he's probably doing 110k or so.
I jumped from a balloon from 16,000 ft once, we had no oxygen so that's all we could go.
I highly recommend it.

It's relatively safe, He'll open at terminal, but teminal will only be around 120mph as any other skydive. He'll start falling really fast because of the thin air, but will actually slow down as he gets lower, Kittenger opened really high, 18k, I imagine this guy will open under 5k. Also back when kit did it, people did not know how to freefall so he was totally out of control and spinning the whole time.

Bit of secondary school physics coming into play with terminal velocity, the speed he's falling won't matter but the height with the atmosphere etc may end up in his death.

Based on my very quick guess won't he be free-falling for like 11 minutes?

If he attached magnets to his jumpsuit and embedded the ground around the landing zone with magnets of the opposite polarity, he wouldn't need a parachute.
