After my last attempt at a more light-hearted collab kind of fell flat (probably due to me lol), the guise started talking about a more serious collab, so here it is. Also, I added 2012 to the title because I thought it'd be cool if we did this an(u)ally (the way I do yo momma every night OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHH)

Some basic guidelinez foh dah n00bz0rz:

Quote by herby190
The idea is simple; you download the GP, listen to it, and pick up where the last person left off, adding in your own part.

Some basic rules to keep this going:

  • If you want to write the next part, just post saying so; this way, multiple people won't pick off from the same part, leaving one entry to be ignored. If the person before you isn't done yet, still, feel free to post and claim your spot. Then, one they're done, whoever had claimed the spot after them can go. If someone already called next, just call the spot after them; pretty simple, really. Once you've got your part done, edit your post calling your spot, and upload it.
  • Label the beginning of your section with your username.
  • Feel free to add whatever you want to (EDIT: Don't. try to follow the previous theme: remember this is a serious collab).
  • Feel free to add tracks; let's say you need a third guitar for the next part, or you think a 5-string bass in Drop A would just make your section awesome. Well, go for it! Just don't add them unnecessarily. For example, if you want a bridge with a string orchestra, and will only need one guitar, it's pretty simple to change one of the guitar tracks setting to strings.
  • If you make any changes to tempo, or the settings of a track, be sure they're done using F10, so it only changes your part, and not those before you.
  • For the most part, don't edit the sections of those before you. Seeing as some parts could be improved with a proper transition, I will allow this; you can change the instruments in any tracks that the person before you used for the last measure of their section, and any tracks they didn't use for the last four measures. This should allow you to make proper transitions, without messing up their section.
  • Eventually, the file will get to large to post. Don't delete other peoples parts to make it smaller; just put it in a .ZIP file.

I think that should pretty much cover everything.

Also, before actually writing something, we should decide upon genre limitations and such: I think we should try a more post-rockish, soft approach, with many layered sections and smooth keyz, but what do you think?

im up for this , but the reason why it often doesnt seem to work is because we all have different styles and its hard to overlap them in 1 song and still coming out the other end sounding like something.

i suggest not worrying about making it metal or djent or post classic rock or whatever all of those stupid labels

i say we take a subject we make a song about instead and not worry so much about the label we give it.

so we can let the subject dictate the music , thats how i write at least.

let me know what u guys think about that , even though it might not work at all

Interesting. What about a Katatonia-ish approach, they usually have the verses you speak of, but heavy choruses.

Edit: Also, should we make like an album, or just ones long song?

I was thinking about making just one song and adding it it maybe lolz.

Maybe we should work on individual parts and then add them on a final file, so it isn't as riff salady? I have no clue.

MobiuZ: I get where you come from, but estabilishing genre limitations is a must, or do you want this to have metalcore breakdowns and brutal death metal sections?

well doesnt it turn into almost exactly that a lot of times anyway even if you put limitations on it ?

and music shouldnt be about limiting yourself to anything imo

That's because people were free to do what they want, those weren't serious collabs.

That's pretty fancy and all, but I still think we should discuss it.

This sounds good, I've already got some DTP - Ki style riffs written down and some slightly more proggy clean riffs.

    Just wanna mention two things.

    1) People should try writing out of their comfort zone if their preferred genre doesn't match the collab's style
    2) Try to reuse previous themes from the song to make it coherent.

I kinda liked the Post-rock-to-Katatonia-ish suggestion. It allows for heaviness, melodic and harmonic exploration, it'd probably be very varied if the new Katatonia album is anything to go by. Also gives the excuse for having one long song :P We could anything to it as well, maybe having Altar of Plagues/Fen style post-black metal sections at some point.

What I want to know is: are we going to have a keyboard? Or is it plain guitar-guitar-bass-drums (this is not a bad thing, and could be an interesting new way for me to write stuff).

Also are we set on the genre? post-Katatonia metal-rock? For those of you that are not familiar with Katatonia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPSGS-ymseI

Another thing that just came to me, are we allowed to use odd time-signatures? Sometimes when I write stuff it's in 7/8 or 15/8.

^ I'm not familiar with Katatonia, but I heard some of their earlier songs from their death/doom era a while ago and enjoyed it: gonna listen to the song you posted too.

Instrument wise I think we shouldn't have any limtations, so keyboards are a yay.

And by me you're totally allowed to use odd time sigs: they can really spice up things.

Lol I just wrote this comment and I don't wanna post yet because I'm really digging this song: is this how they sound now? Big change from their earlier records, but it's still pretty awesome. I def gonna get around checking more of these guys out.

I def wanna make this a depressing collab lol.

Lol, you're reacting exactly the way I reacted when I heard this song. I thought they were some kind of doom (which I'm not really into) and then I heard this. And they're so sad, I just want to hug them.

It's a pretty good album, and if you like this, you'll like the rest (listen to Soil's Song). Saw them live three years ago, they were great.

Anyway, enough off-topic; do we have what we need? Are we ready to fire this baby up?

Their latest album, Dead End Kings, shows lots more prog influence, key changes/odd chords/rhythms etc. than previous albums. Sort of how Mastodon went from Blood Mountain to Crack the Skye.

    And yesh, nice and moody.

Thanks for the crit Ometh here's your free bump

I like Katatonia so I may chip in but... if this is a serious collab then are we still set on making one gigantic long song? Because those always kind of turn to crap with people just adding more and more till all structure is lost. Might it be a good idea instead to just make a few (3-4) songs which will be shorter in length but also more coherent? That way we can come up with a sort of EP like thing.

That'd be cool, but I'm afraid some of the guise won't like it, since I think the idea we all had in mind was just to do a huge song, like all other collabs.

Although this would be a better idea if we decided to record it, and that'd be something I'd like to take into consideration

Same, It'll help keep the flow. I listened to a few Opeth songs today from their earlier material, literally every 4 bars was just another new riff, I kinda dont want one big song that does that.

Yes it works, but I dunno if it's that fitting: remember, this collab is about making your eyes tear imediatly and have a fecal bird emerge from your pooper and fly away.

    I dig it loads though.

But how am I gonna do that? Nah, seriously, I'd need somewhere to start off with first, context and all that. When we start this, would it be with a heavy song/section first or properly drawn out with the crazy ambient dubs and stuffs..
